How do you build and maintain strong relationships with key internal stakeholders,
especially in high-pressure or fast-moving scenarios?
Managing the legal aspects of a company during periods of instability or crisis challenges you to seek more agile, effective and efficient solutions. It becomes a form of ongoing training where the in-house lawyer must remain fully engaged with the different departments and business objectives in order to participate in strategic commercial decision-making, for which legal advice is essential. In doing so, the in-house counsel can help simplify and explain complex legal matters to teams, work jointly and cross-functionally, co-create solutions and support sound decision-making.
Corporate lawyers must not only be experts in law and regulation but also need to be dynamic contributors to the company’s growth and development rather than static figures. Without a doubt, the challenge is significant but the key lies in collaborative work, a strategic approach with a legal, commercial and financial mindset, and the continuous generation of value.
With this in mind, I believe lawyers should forge closer, more collaborative relationships with both internal and external clients. We must become multidisciplinary experts in the company’s business, in technology, innovation and the legal profession itself while also refining new skills along the way. We should be professionals striving to deepen our understanding of the evolving legal landscape.
How do you prioritize diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
Diversity, equity and inclusion are now part of Nissan’s DNA. Our commitment is to promote diversity and create a culture where everyone feels they belong, an environment in which employees, customers and business partners feel respected. We aim to build workplaces where people feel valued, heard and respected.
Cultural change must start at the top. That is why, as Legal Manager, I have a responsibility to help co-create that change through thoughtful conversations with my team to build bridges of understanding.
Listening to and understanding the voices of our team members is the most important step before taking action. It is through this that we can create a stronger, more innovative company. I am fully convinced that embracing different perspectives and being open to uncomfortable conversations will help us meet the changing needs of not only our workplace but also the automotive sector.
The core principles for building a diverse and inclusive culture are transparency, value creation, vulnerability, equity and inclusion.
I am immensely proud to be part of a company that champions diversity, equity and inclusion. To be an integral and active participant in an initiative that empowers individuals, culture and communities, working towards a better society, is a privilege beyond measure.
