As general counsel, you are more than just a legal advisor—you’re a strategic partner and a leader. In fast-moving or high-pressure situations, your ability to build and maintain strong internal relationships depends on trust, alignment with business goals, and a calm, confident leadership presence. A deep understanding of the business allows you to grasp each department’s objectives, risks, and how legal matters intersect with their goals. Your credibility is vital: provide clear, commercially astute advice, and be recognised for offering balanced, reliable judgment—even under pressure. In high-stakes scenarios such as litigation, crisis communications, or regulatory investigations, communicate with clarity and confidence. Above all, when tension rises, be the voice of reason. Prioritise issues, assign responsibilities, and guide the team toward effective solutions.

How do you cultivate legal talent internally, and what skills do you see as most essential for the next generation of in-house lawyers?

Cultivating talent demands sustained commitment and a deep sense of responsibility, as it involves guiding both the professional and personal development of individuals. It is essential to provide them with the necessary tools, resources, and support to perform effectively and grow with confidence. Empowering individuals through autonomy—by entrusting them with decision-making responsibilities within their role—fosters a sense of ownership and strengthens mutual trust. Mentorship plays a vital role, particularly when it includes the development of soft skills that enable individuals to navigate high-stakes or complex situations with poise and sound judgment. Equally important is fostering an environment rooted in respect and collaboration, where individuals feel valued and motivated to reach their full potential. Key competencies for growth include ethics, teamwork, clear communication, critical and strategic thinking, and fluency in technological tools—pillars essential to long-term success.

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?

At Celepsa, sustainability is integral to how we do business, driven by a long-term vision that ensures the continuity of our operations. To this end, we have aligned our operations with environmental considerations. Significant improvements in operational efficiency and sustainability include the adoption of LED lighting, which has led to a 57% reduction in electricity consumption. We have also enhanced waste management practices in our operations. Additionally, since 2022, Celepsa has maintained its carbon neutrality certification granted by AENOR. As General Counsel, I ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements and alignment of our operations with environmental standards, while also fostering a culture of integrity that sets the benchmark for how business should be conducted in the market.
