What do you consider the biggest challenge for in-house legal teams today, and how are you addressing it within your own team?

One of the greatest challenges facing in-house legal teams today is the increasing regulatory complexity, particularly in the energy industry, and the rapid pace of change in both the legal and business environments. Companies now operate in a world where regulations are constantly evolving, technology is reshaping how legal matters are managed, and stakeholder expectations for transparency and compliance continue to rise.

In response to this ever-shifting landscape, our team has adopted a multifaceted strategy. We place a strong emphasis on training and continuous learning, holding regular update sessions on regulatory developments to ensure the team remains well informed and equipped to make strategic decisions. The use of legal technology also plays a key role. By incorporating automation and compliance management tools, we are able to enhance efficiency, reduce risk, and manage large volumes of legal information with agility.

We also take a proactive rather than reactive approach. This involves conducting thorough risk analyses and formulating strategies aimed at minimising potential legal contingencies before they arise. Our legal function works closely with other areas of the business to gain a deep understanding of operational challenges and to deliver legal solutions that are aligned with broader corporate objectives.

Finally, we are committed to developing essential skills within the team, particularly critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication, which are vital for navigating the complexities of today’s legal environment.

Through this integrated approach, our legal team not only stays ahead of industry changes but also delivers significant strategic value to the organisation.

How do you cultivate legal talent internally, and what skills do you see as most essential for the next generation of in-house lawyers?

To develop legal talent within our organisation, we implement strategies that foster both professional growth and legal excellence. These include mentoring programmes in which experienced lawyers guide and support newer professionals, as well as ongoing training focused on regulatory developments and industry trends. We also provide direct exposure to complex cases that challenge and sharpen analytical and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, we actively promote a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, encouraging lawyers to work closely with other departments to gain a more holistic understanding of the business.

When considering the essential skills required by the next generation of in-house lawyers, several key areas come to the fore. Strategic thinking is paramount; it is not enough to understand the law in isolation—lawyers must also appreciate how legal decisions affect overall business strategy. Adaptability and a commitment to continuous learning are equally important, given the ever-evolving nature of the legal landscape. Strong communication and negotiation skills are vital, particularly the ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, accessible language for colleagues across the organisation and to negotiate agreements that serve the company’s interests.

An understanding of technology is also increasingly important. As digitalisation and artificial intelligence continue to transform legal practice, in-house lawyers must be able to grasp and make effective use of these tools. Finally, ethics and leadership remain foundational. Acting with integrity and having the capacity to guide teams in making responsible, principled decisions are essential qualities for trusted legal counsel.

By fostering these skills, we ensure that in-house lawyers are not only legal experts, but also strategic contributors who add tangible value to the organisation.
