Superintendent Legal Mining and Regulatory Affairs | Minera Las Bambas
What do you consider to be the biggest challenge for in-house legal teams today, and how are you addressing it within your own team?
In the mining industry, one of the primary challenges facing in-house legal teams is the need to adapt to an increasingly volatile and complex regulatory environment. This is compounded by growing pressure from communities, local authorities and regulators, all of whom demand the highest standards of compliance.
Within our legal team, we respond to this challenge with a strategic and preventive approach. We work in close collaboration with project development, sustainability and community relations departments, integrating from the earliest stages of each initiative. This early involvement enables us to identify potential regulatory risks before they arise and to offer guidance that is aligned not only with business objectives but also with the wider external environment.
We have also reinforced our internal capabilities for conducting comparative regulatory analysis and interpreting legislative and policy trends. By remaining attuned to political developments and shifts in regulatory focus, we are able to anticipate future scenarios and equip the organisation with clear, proactive action plans.
In contexts where specific regulations may be absent or subject to sudden change, it is essential to think creatively – without compromising legal integrity. We encourage our team to continually seek solutions that support project viability, mitigate risk and uphold the highest ethical standards.
We believe the true value of the legal function today lies in its capacity to provide certainty through clear, well-founded advice, and to serve as an active partner in the pursuit of the company’s strategic goals.
