How has your role as in-house counsel evolved over the past few years, particularly in response to shifting global or regional dynamics?
In recent years, the role of in-house counsel has evolved significantly, shifting from a mere legal specialist to a strategic business partner. The key lies in deeply understanding the internal client’s business, actively engaging in operations, and providing recommendations that go beyond strictly legal matters.
Today, an effective legal advisor must not only consider the local regulatory framework but also understand the international context and the challenges faced by other jurisdictions. This is especially relevant in transnational companies, where a decision made in one country can have significant impacts at the regional or global level.
A comprehensive business vision is essential for proper risk management and for anticipating potential critical scenarios. Rather than simply reacting to problems, the modern legal counsel must foresee risks, design mitigation strategies, and actively contribute to the company’s sustainable growth. Their ability to connect legal matters with strategic business decisions makes all the difference in an increasingly dynamic and globalised corporate environment.
How do you build and maintain strong relationships with key internal stakeholders, especially in high-pressure or fast-moving scenarios?
The key to building and maintaining strong relationships with internal stakeholders is trust and the certainty that you are actively seeking effective legal solutions to their challenges. Being a good listener, practicing active listening, and understanding their needs are essential.
Providing clear solutions aligned with business objectives reinforces your role as a strategic advisor. Additionally, it is crucial to manage risks with confidence and have the ability to say “no” with clarity, using the same approach as when presenting alternatives. Transparency and strategic vision make a difference in high-pressure scenarios.
How do you cultivate legal talent internally, and what skills do you see as most essential for the next generation of in-house lawyers?
Cultivating legal talent internally requires leading by example and fostering mutual support, respect to diversity & inclusion. It’s not just about words but actions—a leader must empower and support their team while identifying each member’s potential. To achieve this, they must understand their team not only as professionals but also as individuals. The most essential skills for the next generation of in-house lawyers include curiosity, to explore innovative solutions; empathy, to understand business needs; results orientation, to deliver tangible value; and creativity, to develop strategic approaches in a dynamic environment. Authentic leadership makes all the difference in talent development.
