How has your role as in-house counsel evolved over the past few years, particularly in response to shifting global or regional dynamics?
The evolution of this role is always ongoing; it’s a process of constant adaptation, where we have to manage not only global or regional changes, but also the company’s expectations and challenges, while working hand in hand with internal stakeholders to achieve these goals. Be side to side, have an holistic vision.
How do you build and maintain strong relationships with key internal stakeholders, especially in high-pressure or fast-moving scenarios?
The key is to always have clear and aligned expectations and goals, developing joint strategies and approaches based on key priorities and in a holistic manner. It’s critical to maintain clear, direct, and efficient communication and adapt accordingly. It’s necessary to have active participation, simplicity and leadership in solving needs with a holistic vision, and not merely legal: the perfect bridge is generated to that the plans are executed.
What do you consider the biggest challenge for in-house legal teams today, and how are you addressing it within your own team?
Some of the challenges we address are maintaining a clear focus in the face of constant changes and industry challenges. It’s important to differentiate between what’s urgent and what’s priority and necessary. Another challenge is constant adaptability according to business needs, being the legal business partner that provides not only legal solutions, but also what the business needs in the moment. How do you cultivate legal talent internally, and what skills do you see as most essential for the next generation of in-house lawyers?
How do you cultivate legal talent internally, and what skills do you see as most essential for the next generation of in-house lawyers?
Providing the right tools based on each individual’s profile and skills is a priority. Understanding the expectations, roles, and vision of each talent is necessary to foster development.
We all have different skills and opportunities for improvement, and, to strengthen what each one needs, it is important to maintain direct communication, provide the necessary support, and guidance.
For the next generation, I would say: embrace challenges; that’s where the learning process lies. Don’t be afraid to develop a vision outside the legal field. Challenge yourselves and develop skills outside your comfort zone. Be curious.
