What strategies has your legal team adopted to manage disputes and mitigate risks in Nigeria’s dynamic business environment?
At CAP, our legal strategy is built on close integration with the business, rather than operating in isolation. We work proactively with commercial, supply chain, sales and finance teams to identify risks early and ensure that contracts and partnerships are structured to protect CAP’s interests while enabling the business to operate efficiently.
In addition, we engage external legal counsel to carry out ongoing legal and regulatory monitoring on our behalf. This ensures that we stay ahead of changes in laws, regulations and policy developments that could impact our operations, allowing us to respond quickly and mitigate risk before issues arise.
Where disputes do occur, we adopt a pragmatic, value-driven approach, prioritising early resolution through negotiation or alternative dispute mechanisms where appropriate, while remaining prepared to litigate decisively when necessary. Overall, this combination of proactive risk management, regulatory vigilance and commercially sound dispute resolution enables CAP to operate confidently in Nigeria’s dynamic business environment.
How is your legal department leveraging technology to improve compliance monitoring, contract management, or governance reporting?
Our legal department has been deliberately leveraging technology to strengthen compliance, governance and operational efficiency across CAP. We utilise a centralised document management portal that serves as a single source of truth for contracts, policies and key legal documents, improving access control, version management and audit readiness.
We also maintain regulatory trackers to monitor applicable laws, regulations and compliance obligations, enabling us to flag changes early and support timely business responses. From a governance perspective, we use a directors’ digital platform, including BoardEffect, to manage board and committee materials, track approvals, and enhance the quality, security and timeliness of governance reporting. Together, these tools improve transparency, accountability and oversight, while allowing the legal function to support the business in a more structured, responsive and forward-looking manner.
