Managing legal counsel | T. Rowe Price Japan

What are the most significant cases, projects or transactions that you and your legal team have recently been involved in?

T. Rowe Price’s Legal Department’s mission is to provide the highest quality legal services while reinforcing the firm’s culture of integrity. In the past year, we continued to partner with internal and external business partners to advance the firm’s business strategies with the ultimate purpose – support clients’ success in reaching their goals.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

While the recent instability may affect clients’ behaviours and decisions, as a firm, we are already resilient and will continue to be so. I don’t think the core of how we approach the legal aspects change.

Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

My first job in a law firm was to help send Christmas cards to clients as a temporary worker (two weeks). Those were the days people didn’t talk about sustainability much, and law firms used to send a large volume of Christmas cards by post. It must have been the way I stuffed the cards to the envelopes (or not!), but the law firm offered me a permanent assistant role, and after some years, I found myself sitting in the same law firm as a lawyer.

Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on that you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful of?

Generative AI is impacting the legal work just like many other things, and has much potential to support what we do. We of course must be mindful of the limits and the risks.

What factors influence your team’s decision to use external legal services versus handling matters in-house, and what criteria are used to evaluate their performance?

It is mainly based on whether expertise on a specific legal issue/area is needed. At times, we may also decide to use external legal services due to internal resource constraints. We evaluate their performance based on the quality of the advice as well as practicality. Cost is also one of the criteria.
