What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess ?
This question has been asked a lot by graduates, or even by experienced lawyers, considering a legal career in-house. I’ve heard a variety of answers but there are three main attributes I keep returning to. First, a mindset of continuous learning is essential. Even if you think “you can’t” then give it a go anyway. I’ve often been told it must be easier working cross-border when you speak different languages, but I have trained individuals with only one language in their skillset to navigate foreign legislation in foreign languages using tools available to us today. These individuals quickly became trusted team members by mastering this and developing additional valuable skills. Embracing an unfamiliar challenge can foster growth and build trust with stakeholders. Second, be versatile. The landscapes you will find yourself navigating are dynamic. Staying current is imperative so you can shift with changing priorities or unforeseen developments and ensure your guidance remains aligned with evolving realities. Finally, keep your advice concise and business oriented as the stakeholders you work with are more likely to be time-constrained decision makers. The ability to distil complex legal issues into clear, actionable insights is critical to being heard and having impact.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
Mental wellbeing and mentorship in the legal practice. As my role as an in-house counsel has evolved, so have the skills I’ve needed to do my job. I have therefore expanded the types of training and networking I attend. At these events, I’ve noticed that all industries are becoming more conscious about mental health. Hearing others share their stories, many of which echoed my own or those of people I know, helped me recognise patterns that I believe can help guide us on how we support future generations of in-house counsel. I’ve learned that achieving balance in life starts with our own choices and so, with the changes I’ve made to sustain a healthy mental wellbeing, I hope to continue sharing and learning with others when I return from maternity leave. Supporting each other this way could have positive effects on our overall health, both physical and mental, and potentially avoid mental illness in the long run.
