How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

Instability or crises, whether driven by climate, political unrest, health emergencies or social factors, has become the new norm in today’s world. To bring real value as a GC to the business in a challenging environment, it is essential to proactively identify pathways or design legal solutions that connect business goals and legal realities to achieve favourable outcomes. Often, a good GC takes ownership of operational needs that may lack a clear accountable party or try to build cross-functional initiatives to ensure that an adequate legal review process is in place for the business team to move things forward with clarity and confidence.

To accomplish this effectively, it is crucial to develop a deep understanding of the various challenges which may impact the business. By gaining insights into your organisation’s strategies, objectives, and priorities, and cultivating empathy for the difficulties faced by the business, you are better positioned to craft “user-friendly” legal solutions that facilitate rather than hinder business progress. This approach ensures that your business team feels well-supported and at the same time reduces business and legal risks.

What is one leadership principle or practice that has had the greatest impact on your career as a GC?

“Leading by example” is the foremost leadership principle which I wholeheartedly believe in. In Top Gun, Maverick demonstrates his abilities to inspire his team, helping them recognise their own potential. Instead of merely instructing your team on what they should or shouldn’t do, show them, and they shall see and understand for themselves. By exemplifying key traits such as integrity, work ethic, accountability, positive attitude, empathy and support, curiosity in the day-to-day practice and communication, a stable team, with a positive team culture, can be cultivated.
