Matthias Murr
Vice president head of legal | maincubes Holding & Service
What are the most significant cases, projects and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?
Over the past year, my team has been deeply involved in several greenfield data center developments and the negotiation of numerous data center customer contracts. These projects required complex contractual frameworks, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation strategies.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
We focus on contractual resilience by embedding provisions such as indexation clauses, force majeure, and termination rights to safeguard our company during volatile periods.
What strategies do you employ to ensure the successful digital transformation of a legal department while maintaining compliance with your country’s data protection laws?
Our strategy includes implementing certified legal AI tools that are fully compliant with national and international data protection laws. We prioritise role-based access controls and continuous audits to maintain compliance while enhancing efficiency.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
There is not one specific experience to point out. Throughout my carrier I was leading the legal workstream of many complex transactions (such as cross-border M&A transactions involving multiple jurisdictions and regulatory regimes and complex contract negotiations such as customer and construction contracts). The complexity of harmonizing diverse legal frameworks and cultural approaches made it both challenging and rewarding.
Given the current geopolitical shifts and growing uncertainties around international free trade, has your company’s risk profile evolved, and are you taking measures to address these challenges?
Yes, of course we do. To just name a few examples: We have enhanced sanctions screening, trade compliance programs, and contractual flexibility for supply chain disruptions in place. These measures help us navigate uncertainties in global trade and regulatory environments.
Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on that you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful of?
AI-driven contract analytics and automation and increased scrutiny on cross-border transactions due to geopolitical tensions
How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?
Embedding ESG principles into corporate policies and supplier contracts, training employees on ESG compliance and collaborating with sustainability/ESG teams to align legal frameworks with ESG goals.
AI has been taken seriously as a potentially revolutionary technological change in the legal world for a number of years now. Has it had a meaningful impact in how your legal team works in this time?
AI has had a meaningful impact, particularly in legal research, contract review, risk analysis, and document automation. It allows us to reduce turnaround times, improve accuracy, reduce costs for external legal advice and free up resources for strategic work.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about? Why is this?
I am passionate about digital ethics and responsible AI adoption. As technology transforms legal practice, ensuring fairness, transparency, and compliance is critical to maintaining trust.
What factors influence your team’s decision to use external legal services versus handling matters in-house, and what criteria are used to evaluate their performance?
Specialised expertise (e.g., regulatory, litigation, cross-border matters) and the ack of internal capacity
Performance is evaluated based on quality of advice, responsiveness, cost-efficiency and alignment with our business objectives
How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company? Can you share an example of a recent legal-led initiative that had a significant impact?
Our team plays a strategic role in enabling growth initiatives. For example, preparing and negotiating construction contracts and customer contracts has been pivotal in expanding our business.
Looking forward, what trends do you foresee in the legal landscape over the next 5–10 years that companies should prepare for?
Further AI integration in legal processes and mandatory ESG reporting’s and ESG compliance provisions, the rising of cyber-risk litigation and greater emphasis on legal tech adoption for efficiency.
