What are the most significant cases, projects and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?

Over the past year, our legal team has been at the very heart of Vestas’ value chain, engaging continuously with every department across the organisation. This close involvement enables us to understand their day-to-day challenges and, through a pragmatic and advisory approach, to reconcile departmental KPIs that can at times pull in different directions—particularly during the contracting process. At the same time, our direct contact with clients keeps us grounded in real-world needs, ensuring that our legal guidance remains client-focused while upholding robust internal governance.

Being deeply embedded within the business also gives the Legal function the ability to identify emerging market signals – from the effects of negative electricity prices to increasing operational and regulatory pressures on operators – and to translate them into clear, actionable contractual strategies and new business opportunities. We have further refined our governance and contract management frameworks to manage market volatility more effectively, safeguard project value, and implement a structured approach to claims and dispute management that strengthens financial resilience.

The offshore wind sector in France offers a strong example of how Legal can add value – acting simultaneously as an enabler of project execution and a safeguard against risk. Managing large, complex, multi-party projects has required close collaboration between legal, commercial, and technical teams. This experience has only reinforced what we witness every day: the role of Legal extends far beyond risk control or avoidance. It is about enabling the organisation to perform sustainably, fostering collaboration, and translating complex regulatory and market challenges into practical, value-creating decisions for the long term.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

Periods of instability (whether driven by geopolitical shifts, market volatility, or sudden regulatory changes) test both the organisation’s resilience and the agility of the legal function. At Vestas, we strive to take a proactive approach by embedding legal risk management directly into operational decision-making, rather than reacting once issues have arisen. Close involvement across departments enables us to anticipate challenges and provide guidance that balances commercial priorities with legal and regulatory obligations. We focus on fostering clarity in decision-making, ensuring that roles, responsibilities, and escalation paths are clearly defined, so the organisation can act decisively even in fast-moving situations.

Direct engagement with clients also plays a vital role. Understanding their concerns and expectations allows us to advise on practical solutions, maintain trust, and align contractual and operational strategies with real-world needs. For instance, in recent years, fluctuations in energy prices, evolving export controls, and tighter operational obligations for asset operators have required coordinated action across legal, commercial, and finance teams. By applying structured frameworks for claims and dispute management, and by stress-testing contractual positions, we have helped protect project value while enabling the business to respond confidently and efficiently.
Ultimately, the role of Legal in times of crisis is to enable the organisation to act – not merely to control risk. It is about transforming uncertainty into actionable insight, fostering collaboration across functions, and ensuring that Vestas remains resilient, trusted, and capable of pursuing its long-term strategy even in the most challenging environments.

Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

One of the most rewarding experiences of my career has been working as a lawyer in the renewable energy sector, helping to transform complex projects into reality and expand access to reliable electricity. For me, this embodies a personal credo: make things happen! Legal work is not merely about identifying risks or drafting contracts; it is about enabling projects that deliver tangible and lasting impact.

A particularly memorable example is the Taiba N’Diaye wind project in Senegal, which increased the country’s total electricity capacity by around 15 per cent. Though a small contribution to a much larger effort, being part of that achievement was deeply fulfilling. What makes this experience unique is the combination of legal complexity and visible results. It goes beyond professional accomplishment – it is the satisfaction of witnessing how legal work, when approached with purpose and collaboration, can directly enable progress on the ground. That sense of impact is what I value most in my role as a lawyer in renewable energy.

How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?

At Vestas, the legal team plays an active role in fostering a corporate culture that truly embraces ESG principles. Recognised internationally for our sustainability efforts – most recently by Corporate Knights, which ranked Vestas as the most sustainable energy solutions company and third overall globally – we view Legal not merely as a compliance function, but as a driver of sustainable practice.

By integrating ESG into governance, internal policies, and day-to-day operations, we ensure that decision-making reflects ethical standards and long-term objectives. We support reporting, advise on sustainable initiatives, and collaborate closely with other departments to embed ESG considerations into everyday business. Legal also helps teams to understand and manage environmental, social, and regulatory impacts in practical, actionable terms.

What I find most rewarding is witnessing how legal guidance can influence real decisions. Our input helps clarify responsibilities, support operational choices, and ensure that sustainability objectives are achieved in practice. The ability to shape behaviour, promote responsible conduct, and embed ESG principles throughout the organisation gives the Legal function a clear and tangible impact.
