Career Biography
Sharon Mazimhaka currently works as General Manager, Corporate Services and Company Secretary at MTN Rwandacell PLC. Her legal career was born, nurtured and matured all at MTN Rwandacell, where she has worked for the past sixteen years after joining the company straight after completing her post-graduate degree.
From her first role as a Legal Officer supporting on the drafting and reviewing of contracts, she became the Legal and Regulatory Affairs Supervisor adding regulatory matters to her responsibilities.
After four years in that role, she was promoted to Head of Department, as Head of Legal and Regulatory and Company Secretary, which was then elevated to General Manager, Legal and Regulatory and Company Secretary in 2019. In this role she experienced a license renewal, incorporation of a subsidiary company and listing on the Rwanda Stock Exchange all in the same year – and during a global pandemic – an experience that stretched and grew her capabilities as a legal professional and a leader.
In the same year, 2021, Mazimhaka’s role was expanded to include the Corporate Affairs function, and she became General Manager, Corporate Services and Company Secretary. Having been witness to the growth of the Legal and Regulatory department for the past sixteen years, she has led the shift from the legal team being seen as paper pushers, who simply execute on requests of the business, to being integral partners to the business. This means understanding the company’s priority strategic areas and ensuring the proper guidance is given to mitigate any legal and regulatory risks. This clears the path for the business to achieve its goals, but in a manner that protects the company from undue litigation, regulatory sanctions and reputational damage.
