What are the most significant cases, projects or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?
Recently, my team and I have been deeply focused on several key areas that are vital to our company’s growth and operational efficiency.
One of our most significant undertakings has been providing robust support for the company’s expansion strategy across the nation. As we strategically open new branches and revitalise existing ones, my team and I have been instrumental in meticulously drafting and reviewing all the lease agreements for these new locations. We’ve also handled the complex engineering contracts necessary for the construction and remodelling efforts.
Simultaneously, we’ve dedicated substantial effort to support our technical areas in keeping our product offerings cutting-edge and compliant. This involves two key aspects: updating the General Conditions of our existing insurance policies to reflect evolving legal landscapes and market needs, and crucially, creating entirely new General Conditions for our innovative insurance products. This proactive approach ensures our policies remain legally sound, transparent, and responsive to the evolving demands of our clients.
Also, and this is a constant, ongoing endeavour, we’ve dedicated substantial effort to enhancing our service capabilities through comprehensive vendor contract management. We’ve been working tirelessly to elaborate and finalise contracts with a diverse range of suppliers. These agreements are crucial because they directly empower us to optimise the services we provide across all our insurance lines.
Finally, during last year and in 2025 from the Legal Committee of insurance guild, we have worked on an ambitious project to amend the insurance law, and we have participated in numerous discussions and meetings regarding this matter.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
When periods of instability or crisis arise, my approach to managing legal aspects is proactive and strategic. Whether it’s a new regulatory challenge or an unforeseen event impacting our operations, my team and I immediately launch into a comprehensive legal assessment. This involves identifying potential risks, understanding the scope of the issue, and determining which legal frameworks apply.
Also, this requires providing clear, actionable legal advice to the executive leadership and relevant business units. We work together with them to develop strategies that comply with the law and that also protect the company’s assets, reputation, and client relationships.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
Yes, a significant part of my career experience includes a period as a litigation attorney specialising in civil, administrative and constitutional matters. During that time, I had the invaluable opportunity to regularly attend court hearings and defend the interests of our firm’s clients in a multitude of legal processes. I’m proud to say we achieved successful outcomes in many of those cases.
This direct exposure to the courtroom, the intricacies of administrative law, and the process of actively defending clients’ rights has profoundly shaped my legal approach. I genuinely believe that this type of experience makes my current role as an in-house counsel significantly more enriching and profound. It provides me with a more integral and comprehensive vision of the law.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about? Why is this?
I am very passionate about the life and health insurance industry. From a legal perspective, I truly believe there are so many areas within these sectors that are still ripe for exploration and development, particularly in markets like the Dominican Republic. We have an insurance law that dates to 2002, and with the right updates and modernisation, it could become a real axis for best practices and greater innovation. Also, I believe that being a legal in-house counsel in this industry truly helps ensuring fair practices, transparent policy language, and robust claims handling processes. As a lawyer, I pursue this type of beneficial practices for businesses, consumers and society at large.
