Vice president, head of legal and compliance | Danske Commodities

Team size: 22 in unit – unit consists of 3 subteams, legal, compliance and market access

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

Our approach emphasises agility, flexibility and thereby ability to quickly adapt to new circumstances. We’re in an industry that develops rapidly, so we are used to swift changes. To ensure that we identify and control legal risks and aspects, early involvement in business decisions is essential. This requires close collaboration and trust between our teams, laying the foundation for streamlined processes and swift decision-making.

In Danske Commodities we ensure that common goals that are to be achieved through a joint effort across the organisation are included in each individual unit’s strategy, and that the units’ efforts are in alignment with the overall corporate strategy. Part of the 2025 unit strategy for legal and compliance is a focus on expanding the use of digital tools to drive efficiency and scalability across all business interactions.

What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?

In 2024, the legal and compliance unit has played a crucial role in supporting the continued growth of our portfolio, which now totals over 14 GW of power assets under contract. This represents an increase of nearly 20% from last year, marking our largest portfolio to date. Our assets include a diverse mix of onshore and offshore wind turbines, solar parks, combined heat and power (CHP) plants, and batteries located across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Croatia, and the UK. 2024 was the year when we added our first Power-to-X asset to the portfolio as we signed an agreement with the Kassø facility, which is set to become the world’s largest commercial Power-to-X facility upon completion. Notably, this year we entered into the largest renewables deal in our company’s history by securing a balancing agreement for two Polish offshore wind farms, Baltyk 2 and Baltyk 3. Once operational, these projects will have a combined capacity of 1,440 MW, providing clean energy to approximately two million households.

How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?

We believe in an inclusive working environment, where all employees feel welcomed, respected and that they can make a difference. We have launched numerous initiatives to foster an inclusive and equitable work environment. We train our leaders to strengthen their capability to act as inclusive role models, we are working with our leaders and employees to reduce unconscious bias, and we have taken steps to ensure a holistic talent assessment. Furthermore, we are strengthening collaboration by supporting initiatives that break down silos to create a feeling of fellowship in and across teams.

In your opinion, what are the main trends that are salient in your country currently?

In Denmark, as in other European countries, there is a strong focus on how to boost the green transition and on ensuring energy independence and lower energy prices. As Danske Commodities have a strategy with focus on paving the way for green energy, it’s a challenge we are following closely and want to contribute positively to. We do that by bringing renewables to the market at scale and provide the flexibility needed to meet the energy demands and intermittency of renewable power generation.
