Tencent, recently established in a new, multimillion-dollar Shenzhen-based headquarters, has been going from strength to strength. The company – perhaps best known as the creator of mobile chat service WeChat – has once again proven itself to be one of the best investment opportunities in the world, and achieved the major milestone of surpassing US$500bn in market value in 2017, becoming the first Asian company to do so. Its expert legal team, led by the extremely well-respected vice president and general counsel Brent Irvin, has been at the centre of this and has been commended by industry observers for excellent performance on a number of projects. In particular, its handling of complex M&A deals such as Riot Games and Supercell, its winning of a major antitrust case in front of the PRC Supreme Court and the very significant progress it has made with cleaning up digital piracy in the video, music and online literature spaces over the last few years have been remarked upon as among the best work undertaken by in-house legal teams in China in recent years.
