What are the most significant cases, projects and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?
Every year, our legal team takes on major challenges of diverse nature, always focused on supporting the business in its growth while managing risks. Over the past year, we have been involved in M&A processes and significant real estate transactions related to our stores and distribution centre, including the opening of more than 20 new stores. We also supported the launch of new private label brands and products, and the creation of a loyalty club for our supermarket’s formats. In addition, we led the implementation of the Data Protection Law, the Private Security Law, and the Karin Law, strengthening internal policies, preventive protocols, and compliance mechanisms.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Regarding crisis management, we know that, in retail, crises are very tangible: supply chain disruptions, labour conflicts, or regulatory pressures. In such contexts, our role is to set priorities and secure what is essential for continuity, ensuring key supplier contracts, immediate regulatory compliance, and worker protection. At the same time, we provide management with clear and practical solutions, enabling stores to remain open, supply to continue, and customer trust to be protected. Finally, we place great importance on relationships with regulators, unions, and industry associations, understanding that in retail, reputation is valuable and relevant asset of the company.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
One of the most unique and enriching experiences of my career was leading a regional legal team in Central America with responsibility across five countries, each with its own regulatory framework. The challenge was both technical and cultural. We managed to standardise key legal and contractual matters, implement monitoring systems and stronger management of the company’s intellectual property, and roll out robust governance and compliance frameworks.
What made this experience remarkable was guiding a diverse team through different idiosyncrasies and regulations while identifying common factors and unifying principles. It represented significant professional and personal growth, aligning multi-jurisdictional legal practice under a coherent strategy, and proving that leadership and shared values can transcend borders.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about? Why is this?
I am deeply passionate about leadership, female empowerment, and, more broadly, diversity and inclusion as core values that enrich organisations. Diverse teams bring multiple perspectives, fostering collaboration and driving better results. In recent years, my greatest passion has been mentoring. I became certified as a mentor for adolescents and have supported both male and female mentees. I also designed a mentoring circles program for in-house women lawyers in Chile, which launched last year with five groups, ten mentors and 30 mentees. This year, we are launching the second edition, adding the male participation. In addition, I have mentored university students and participated in programs run by organisations linked to our company. For me, mentoring is about giving back so that more women, and now men as well, can access the opportunities I have had. Leadership, after all, has no gender.
