What projects are you most proud to have worked on over the past 12 months?

Over the past year, getting to executive producing two of our scripted films — Sidelined 2: Intercepted and How to Lose a Popularity Contest — was a major highlight. It’s been incredibly fulfilling to help bring these stories to life from both a legal and creative standpoint. I also had the chance to work on two exciting original animated projects, Mermicornos: Starfall and Super Team Canada, which were meaningful not only because we own the rights, but because they reflect our ambition to build globally relevant, premium content from the ground up. I have also had the great privilege of working on a slate of original content and service development deals that have pushed the creative and commercial boundaries of our studio. From structuring complex international co-productions to navigating rights and tax credits, each deal is a balancing act between creativity, compliance, and business goals. It’s been especially rewarding to help bring culturally meaningful stories to screen — and ensure they’re set up for success globally.

Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

My role is dynamic and constantly evolving, from negotiating talent agreements to structuring cross-border financing and rights deals, often under tight timelines. That’s part of what makes the work so exciting. With a diverse slate that spans scripted live action series and films, animated series, and complex unscripted, documentary-style productions, the legal and business challenges shift with each project. No two days are the same, and that variety keeps me sharp, engaged, and always learning.

Some situations have tested my limits in the best way. I once had to close a large international deal with last-minute changes while on a ferry, with limited cell reception and a toddler running wild. It was chaos, but everything still got signed on time. Another time, I was tasked with closing six test deals for actors in a 72-hour window over a holiday weekend. These moments, though intense, reflect the reality of the work: fast-paced, unpredictable, and incredibly rewarding.

How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company?

We view Legal and Business Affairs as strategic partners to our creative and finance teams. From day one, we work closely with development, finance, and production to negotiate and shape deal terms that drive long-term value, support growth, and ensure eligibility for key incentives. Our approach is to strike the right balance, managing legal risk while enabling maximum creative freedom and innovation.

We’re always looking for ways to contribute beyond traditional legal and business affairs support, actively seeking opportunities to advance the overall success of Thunderbird. And, while we take our work seriously, we also take joy in seeing it come to life onscreen — sometimes even stepping in as extras on set ourselves!
