Bart van Sprundel
General counsel | Telenet Group
Career Biography
Bart van Sprundel joined Telenet group in 2014 and, since then, has held various senior legal, transactional, and governance roles. In 2023, he became General Counsel, and in October 2024, he joined Telenet’s Senior Leadership Team, responsible for the legal, regulatory, and privacy departments. The Telenet group’s activities extend beyond telecom, with a portfolio that also includes media, entertainment and ’new business’ assets, while the Telenet group is currently owned by Liberty Global.
Before joining Telenet group, Bart worked in both private practice and in an international corporate environment in a career spanning more than two decades. He started his career working for Allen & Overy LLP as a corporate and M&A lawyer, after which he joined a UK-listed manufacturing company as legal manager.
Bart also has many years of boardroom experience, serving as both Company Secretary and director in several companies across diverse industries (including at Telenet, Wyre, Blossom, Eltrona and Caviar).
He holds a Master of Laws from the University of Antwerp and is a Guberna certified director.
Bart’s leadership has been instrumental in various acquisition and financing matters, board and shareholder relations, and management of legal risks of all kinds.
Transactions pursued by Telenet in which Bart was heavily involved include: full acquisitions (such as BASE, SFR, Nextel, De Vijver Media); divestment files (such as Telenet’s tower portfolio business); ventures and partnership files (such as Wyre and, more recently, the potential cooperation for mass fibre rollout in Flanders by Wyre/Telenet and Fiberklaar/Proximus); and the delisting of Telenet. All of these files have a rather unique nature in Belgium and have been transformational for the Telenet group.
While navigating the group through these high-value and multi-disciplinary transactions, Bart has shaped and proudly leads a 30-person legal team that manages the extended Telenet group’s business’s legal, privacy and regulatory risks in a rapidly evolving legal and regulatory landscape on a day-to-day basis.
Bart van Sprundel’s is a passionate professional who enjoys sharing his insights with peers and stakeholders through various platforms. Authenticity and integrity are his key leadership imperatives, alongside a ‘can do’ mentality and a collaborative mindset.
He puts culture high on the priority list: expertise is important, but culture and attitude even more so- a team is more than the sum of its parts.
According to Bart, an in-house lawyer needs to be agile, adaptable, proactive, and a true team player, with a thorough understanding of the stakeholder universe at play. Potential legal issues should be flagged promptly and upfront, so alternative solutions can be worked out. Internal client’s business concerns need to be genuinely listened to and thoroughly understood, so the legal team can problem-solve along with them. Maintain a ‘can do’ mentality but draw the line when necessary. Never compromise on integrity but always keep an open mind for alternatives that might better serve the business purpose.
