What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
In oil and gas, deals became increasingly difficult to progress as the Ukraine War drove up oil prices and then inflationary pressure and rising interest rates created macroeconomic headwinds. Recognising that we were in a changing environment and responding accordingly resulted in several deals being cancelled. Whilst somewhat disappointing, it was important to remain value-driven and know when to walk away.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
Virtual collaboration tools which have created new-found flexibility for lawyers are not going away. Natural language processing tools driven by AI technology like ChatGPT, with its text-based responses, are also going to radically change the way law is practiced, initially by eliminating tedious and repetitive tasks. In the longer term, AI could replace much of the work currently done by in-house legal teams.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
As change continues to occur at an ever-increasing speed, lawyers will need to remain adaptable. A learner mindset and a willingness to embrace new ways of working will be essential.
