What are the most significant cases, projects and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?
Recently, our most significant matters have centered on protecting the company’s intellectual property from parties attempting to exploit the judicial system. We developed strategies to assert our rights while avoiding costly, drawn-out litigation, using early case assessment, procedural defenses, and targeted dispute resolution. This approach has allowed us to safeguard key assets, deter frivolous claims, and control legal spending. By balancing strong IP protection with cost efficiency, we’ve preserved the company’s innovations and positioned the business to focus on growth rather than unnecessary legal battles.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
During periods of instability, we focus first on clearly identifying and aligning legal priorities with the organisation’s most critical needs. We strategically engage outside counsel where their expertise adds value, while carefully managing scope to balance effectiveness with cost control. At the same time, we take a proactive approach, regularly scanning for potential pitfalls, stress-testing existing agreements, and anticipating issues before they escalate. This combination of prioritization, targeted use of external resources, and forward-looking risk management helps ensure the organization remains resilient and able to navigate challenges effectively.
AI has been taken seriously as a potentially revolutionary technological change in the legal world for a number of years now. Has it had a meaningful impact on how your legal team works in this time?
Yes, AI has had a meaningful impact on how we work. We actively use AI tools to handle routine or repetitive tasks more quickly and accurately, much like how digital spreadsheets transformed finance and accounting. This allows us to reduce “drone work” and redirect our time toward higher-value activities: strategy, analysis, and judgment. By integrating AI thoughtfully, we’ve improved efficiency without compromising quality, enabling the team to focus on complex legal and business challenges where human insight is most critical.
What factors influence your team’s decision to use external legal services versus handling matters in-house, and what criteria are used to evaluate their performance?
Our decision to use external legal services is guided by cost analysis, total risk, available resources, and the expertise required for each matter. When specialised knowledge or additional capacity is needed, we engage outside counsel while keeping routine work in-house. We evaluate performance based on their ability to balance cost-effectiveness with competency, responsiveness, and practical solutions. By working closely with outside counsel, we ensure alignment with our business priorities while maintaining high-quality legal support in the most efficient and effective manner possible.
