How has your role as in-house counsel evolved over the past few years, particularly in response to shifting global or regional dynamics?
Over the past few years, my role as in-house counsel has significantly evolved to adapt to the changing global and regional dynamics. The increasing complexity of regulatory environments and the rapid pace of technological advancements have necessitated a more proactive and strategic approach to legal counsel. I have had to become more involved in business decision-making processes, ensuring that legal considerations are integrated into the company’s strategic planning. Additionally, the rise of remote work and digital transformation has required a focus on cybersecurity and data privacy, making it essential to stay ahead of emerging legal trends and risks. Implementing technology has been a key aspect of this evolution, allowing us to streamline processes and enhance our ability to respond to legal challenges swiftly.
How do you build and maintain strong relationships with key internal stakeholders, especially in high-pressure or fast-moving scenarios?
Building and maintaining strong relationships with key internal stakeholders is crucial, especially in high-pressure or fast-moving scenarios. I prioritise open communication and transparency, ensuring that stakeholders are kept informed of legal developments and potential impacts on their areas of responsibility. Regular meetings and updates help foster trust and collaboration. Additionally, I strive to understand the business objectives and challenges faced by different departments, allowing me to provide tailored legal advice that aligns with their goals. By being approachable and responsive, I can effectively support stakeholders in navigating complex situations and making informed decisions.
What do you consider the biggest challenge for in-house legal teams today, and how are you addressing it within your own team?
The biggest challenge for in-house legal teams today is managing the increasing volume and complexity of legal issues while maintaining efficiency and effectiveness. To address this, our team has implemented several strategies, including leveraging technology for legal research and document management, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development, and promoting cross-functional collaboration. We also prioritise workload management and delegation to ensure that team members can focus on high-priority tasks. By adopting these practices, we can better navigate the evolving legal landscape and provide robust support to the company.
