What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

This past year has indeed been a significant one for the Jumia legal team in Nigeria for diverse reasons. This was guided by our understanding of what the business set out to achieve both locally and internationally. For the sake of brevity, selected achievements would be highlighted.

From a public affairs/advocacy standpoint, our legal team currently represents Jumia Nigeria as a member of the National Advisory Committee on E-Commerce and Digital Economy that works in concert with the Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. The legal team (on behalf of Jumia Nigeria) has been privileged to engage Federal Ministries, departments and agencies with a view to contributing on national discourse and policies as relates to the growth, development and sustainability of the E-commerce industry, improving ease of doing business and creating value. It is also pertinent to mention that the legal team has in the recent past, as a member of the stakeholder/review committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and non-governmental agencies; been privileged to contribute to the review of the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill.

Indeed, as a business, Jumia’s customers are at the heart of what we do when it comes to retail. As we have always strived to do, the legal team ensured the advancement of consumer protection topics through proactive issue assessment, clear communication and effective mediation strategies in the resolution of customer complaints whilst engaging relevant consumer protection agencies such as the Federal Competition & Consumer Protection Commission and the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), resulting in a perfect 100% record of resolution of all customer complaints. Late last year, 2025, Jumia received LASCOPA’s maiden award for advancing consumer protection in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Regarding litigation in the year under review, the legal team collaborating with our external solicitors successfully closed and won not less than 6 cases. Mitigating legal risk and exposure to the barest minimum resulting in 99.8% savings on all claims against Jumia Nigeria at various courts in the Country.

What strategies has your legal team adopted to manage disputes and mitigate risks in Nigeria’s dynamic business environment?

Towards the management of disputes and the mitigation of risks against our organisation, our in-house legal team adopts various strategies that include early case assessment and isolation of issues that could crystallise into potential disputes or litigation. This is implemented by cross-functional collaboration and being in the loop of transactions and communications of all business units within the organisation thus rendering real time legal support and de-escalation of crises. Additionally, the adoption of effective risk management strategies, ensuring compliance with extant laws, and facilitating periodic company-wide training tailored to various business units on the legal aspects of their respective business units results in material progress. Last but not least, internally, the legal team continues to adopt effective mediation and alternative dispute resolution when dealing with third parties and externally, we work with our solicitors by implementing procedures to manage claims and disputes, including pre-action case management and strategy to ensure successful outcomes when it comes to lawsuits instituted against the business.

How is your legal department leveraging technology to improve compliance monitoring, contract management, or governance reporting?

Jumia remains a fast-paced business environment that is driven by technology and thus leveraging technology as a legal team is not optional but a necessity. The legal department has utilised online platforms that provide up to date legal information sourcing, compliance, and regulation in respect of African laws. This has provided guidance, regulatory and legal intelligence. Given the scope of our business, we execute and manage a significant volume of contracts and utilise our internally developed Contract Management Tool, developed by Jumia Tech team. This has improved efficiency and cost management for Jumia as a business. On governance reporting we monitor the legal and regulatory landscape via internal tool “legal watch.” We are abreast of recent developments concerning various laws governing all aspects of our business. Our parent company is listed on the NYSE; thus, Jumia prioritises legal and regulatory compliance by timely governance reporting when being periodically audited by our external auditors.
