Richard is an experienced commercial litigator who deals in a wide range of contentious and dispute resolution work as well as commercial arbitrations. He is also an accredited mediation advocate. Within his broad-based practice, he specialises in commercial, corporate and property related disputes, professional negligence and matters arising from the international wealth sector and also works closely with the family, private client and employment teams. He heads the firm’s international trade and commerce group and jointly leads the firm's sports law group.

Through a combination of both strategic and legal advice, Richard plays an integral role in his clients’ businesses. Much of his work has an international and offshore element and he often manages multi-jurisdictional disputes. He is well regarded by his peers for his keen understanding of trial work on both sides of the Atlantic, and is the first port of call for our North American clients when a contentious matter arises, particularly those serviced from our San Francisco office.

John Doherty  heads Penningtons Manches LLP practice and acts for large multinationals in unsafe consumer products matters and investigations conducted by Trading Standards, among other work. The practice was boosted with the hiring of Dan Hyde  from Howard Kennedy LLP in August 2017, and Jeremy Clarke-Williams  who joined in September 2017 from Slater and Gordon. The practice continues to act for Cannon Automotive and C.A. Holdings in proceedings against its former US distributor in relation to BMW car mats and Hyundai vehicles that were allegedly defective and sold across the US. Other key practitioners to note are Richard Marshall and Elise Bevan.

Penningtons Manches LLP‚Äôs ‚Äėvery professional‚Äô team regularly acts for claimants in multi-party professional negligence claims.¬†David Niven¬†represented multiple claimants in a ¬£6m action against an international solicitors' firm in relation to purchases of off-plan properties in two developments in Calabria, Italy; he is also representing various claimants in a ¬£1.3m group action against a solicitors' firm, regarding losses arising out of failed off-plan transactions for the purchase of leasehold interests in hotel rooms and student accommodation in a number of failed property developments across Britain. Richard Marshall¬†heads the international trade and commerce group and specialises in negligence and regulatory claims involving solicitors, accountants, architects and surveyors. Senior associate David O‚ÄôBrien¬†is also a key member of the team. Rustam Dubash¬†heads the commercial dispute resolution team.

Immigration is another area of expertise:¬†Hazar El-Chamaa¬†acted for an e-sports tournament organiser on obtaining a visa for an e-sports player to enable him to play in a UK competition, and advised one international footballer on the impact of Brexit on his transfer to a UK premiership club. Rennes FC is another client. 'Very pragmatic'¬†employment and disciplinary expert¬†Andrew Haywood¬†heads the department, and is 'ambitious for outcomes for his clients'.
