Position

Matthew is recognised as an expert in intellectual property law, IT and commercial matters, particularly in the media, sports, entertainment and creative industries. Matthew has extensive experience in developing, protecting and implementing commercial rights programmes for a large number of sports, media and entertainment organisations and events, advising on strategic intellectual property, IT and media rights strategies.

Matthew is renowned for his knowledge and understanding of brand protection strategies having advised on the use of terms such as “FINE”, “GRAND PRIX”, “NEW LOOK”, and “FABÉRGE”.

Matthew has developed a substantial practice and loyal client following and advises clients on a range of creative and entertainment industries such as television, modelling and sports and has acted for some of London’s biggest names in the bar, restaurant and nightclub arenas. He also has a solid client following in the technology sector.

Matthew’s practice covers a wide variety of contracts, often of a global or an international nature. He also has particular expertise in the structuring, negotiation and protection of licensing and franchise arrangements. He has worked previously as an in-house lawyer and has a unique understanding of the fast pace and requirements of commerce. Matthew was legal counsel for A1 Grand Prix, the brainchild of a prominent member of the Dubai Royal Family.

Matthew is also a Notary Public and a member of The Notaries Society. Matthew writes as a legal expert for many publications and has appeared on Sky News.

Daniel Bellau leads the team at Hamlins LLP, which handles public and private M&A and is known for advising overseas quoted companies. The technology, media, leisure and real estate sectors are particular areas of focus. Highlights included advising new client Trevali Mining Corporation on the English law aspects of its $418m acquisition of a portfolio of zinc assets from Glencore; acting on the merger between GPEA, the parent company of the Guild of Property Professionals and Fine & Country, and online estate agent easyProperty to form e-Prop Services; and assisting Park Plaza Hotels Europe with the £14m acquisition of a significant minority stake in South Bank Hotel Management. Aselle Djumabaeva-Wood, who is dual qualified in the UK and Russia, consultant Louise Wolfson and media and IP expert Matthew Pryke are also noted.

Hamlins LLP  advises clients in the media, hotel and leisure and retail industries on strategic brand growth, protection and exploitation matters. The practice strengthened its offering in media and data protection with the arrival of Simon Gallant in October 2017. Martin Ochs  focuses on copyright and music IP litigation and continues to work with TRAP to manage counterfeit merchandise. Commercial and IP partner Matthew Pryke 's recent work includes assisting on the commercial and branding merger of several leading modelling agencies, brand licensing arrangement between easyProperty and Fine & Country Limited and licensing and commercialisation of several brands within the Brompton Group of entertainment venues.

Noted for its ever-growing strength in alternative and short-format sports, the team at Hamlins LLP  is also regularly active in football, motorsports and cricket. Group head Matthew Pryke acted for the ECB on the corporate structuring, operations and venue arrangements for the 2019 Cricket World Cup; he also continued to advise MTB Ventures on structuring, growing and broadcasting its Tie Break Tens tennis series, including events in Australia and New York that involved such players as Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and the Williams sisters. Sports media and content provider La Liga Lowdown instructed Pryke on structuring and securing various rights, involving negotiations with high-profile figures in Spanish football. Other clients include UK Sport, Locura Adventures and sports management agency B66 Group. Christopher Hutchings is recommended for reputation management and defamation work.
