GC Powerlist: Southeast Asia

On 23 February 2017, The Legal 500 launched its first iteration of the GC Powerlist in Southeast Asia. The reception, held at the iconic Raffles Hotel in Singapore, brought together over 100 in-house lawyers from across the region.

The GC Powerlist is a publication designed to highlight the most influential and innovative general counsel in a given market, involving a three-month process of nominations, background research and interviews. Each individual has made a demonstrable impact to their team, company or industry through innovative approaches to their everyday work.

This instalment of the publication featured in-house lawyers from nine countries across Southeast Asia: Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar.

General counsel from a range of industries attended the event, flying from all over the region for the evening. Some notable international and domestic companies included Microsoft, GlaxoSmithKline, Facebook, Standard Chartered, Goldman Sachs and Telekom Malaysia.

After short introductions from The Legal 500 and the sponsor law firms, the guests listened to a key note speech from Jeff Bullwinkel, associate general counsel and director of corporate, external and legal affairs for Asia Pacific and Japan at Microsoft. Mr Bullwinkel gave his thoughts on trust and integrity, with a focus on the opportunities in-house have to lead in this area, and the challenges they face in doing so in the region.
