Clyde & Co LLP handles multi-jurisdictional mandates for a diverse mix of clients including shipowners, P&I Clubs, charterers and operators, hull underwriters, cargo insurers, trading and energy companies, banks, shipyards, freight-forwarders and logistics companies; key clients include Glencore and Mitsui & Co Group. The team advises on collision and salvage, pollution liabilities, marine insurance disputes, charter party issues, shipbuilding and ship repair issues. Within the team, Ik Wei Chong focuses on transportation, international trade and insurance matters; Andrew Rourke specialises in shipping and trading transactions and Canming Wang handles contentious marine and trade-related matters. Senior associate Flora Tang is also a name to note.

HFW advises multinational clients on a range of contentious matters, transactions and regulation. Within the team, Julian Davies has 'sound understanding of the legal landscape' and a particular focus on shipping, trade and energy matters; dual-qualified in the UK and US, Trevor Fox advises on corporate compliance and banking matters with a focus on ship sale and finance; and Nicholas Poynder specialises in charter party, bill of lading, and shipyard disputes. The team was expanded with the hire of Yaolin Ruan who joined from in-house at the Charterers P&I Club.

Ince's team includes a number of 'highly dedicated lawyers’ who ‘communicate smoothly with its clients’. It is particularly recommended for maritime trade, goods trading and international commercial arbitration. Wai Yue Loh is ‘an excellent lawyer with rich professionalism and experience’ and is ‘familiar not only with English law but also with Hong Kong, Singapore and mainland China’. Fei Mao has extensive experience in cross-border commercial litigation and is singled out for his 'rich shipping sector knowledge and personal charm’. Shanghai-based Paul Ho focuses on shipbuilding, offshore construction, ship repair and sale, while managing associate Zeldar Wang specialises in maritime matters. The team has been strengthened further following the hire of Janice Lee from Stephenson Harwood and the promotion of Eileen Tang to the partnership. Recent instructions include marine insurance, shipping finance and corporate matters.

Stephenson Harwood has a solid shipping finance practice with a track record of acting for major international banks as well as large Chinese finance leasing companies; it also has a growing wet shipping practice led by Guijun Wang, who is recommended for contentious multi-jurisdictional shipping cases. Among its recent highlights, Hong Kong-based Andrew Rigden Green is representing a bank in a multi-million-dollar claim against a shipowner following an insolvency, while Hongkai Zhou is acting for a financial leasing company in a sale and leaseback transaction. The team's client roster features Guodian Shipping (Hong Kong) Company,  Michharry & Company Nigeria and The People’s Insurance Company of China (Hong Kong).

Wikborg Rein's sizeable China shipping practice is particularly strong in advising on offshore fish farm innovation, new-building/construction contracts, negotiations, distressed assets disposal and dispute resolutions for Chinese shipyards and international buyers. Recent highlights include Ronin Zong advising the Chinese Institute of Marine and Offshore Engineering on the construction of an offshore fish farm unit and representing a major Chinese client in its dispute against the charter of one floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel. Other key names to note include managing partner Christian James-Olsen, Le Zhong and Yafeng Sun.

DLA Piper is praised for providing ‘accurate assessment on the degree of legal and commercial risks in a timely manner' and demonstrating 'sound judgement in planning and managing contentious matters’. The ‘experienced, efficient and very knowledgeable’ team is also singled out for its 'client-oriented approach’. Key individuals include Hong Kong-based litigation and regulatory practice head Ernest Yang, who is ‘very proficient, diligent and practical’ and displays ‘in-depth knowledge of the law as well as the shipping industry’; Kevin Chan focuses on cross-border litigation and international arbitration; Roy Chan advises on high-value shipping cases; and counsel Xiaoshan Chen.

Norton Rose Fulbright has international experience and significant knowledge which enables it to handle a broad range of matters from structured finance to anti-competitive actions, ship conversion to offshore disputes, and from environmental regulation to the impact of blockchain and the digitalisation of the shipping industry. The team advises a mix of banks, lessors, brokers, owners and operators. Key individuals include Fei Kwok in Shanghai and Ben Rose in Singapore.
