Felsberg Advogados has carved out a leading position as a debtor-side restructuring practice, though its creditor-side work continues to increase. Name partner Thomas Benes Felsberg is ‘a reference in his area of practice’, with ‘decades of experience’. Among the team’s many recent highlights, it acted for Tonon Bioenergia in court-supervised reorganisation proceedings to restructure its $750m debt, with Felsberg working alongside Paulo Fernando Campana Filho and Pedro Henrique Torres Bianchi. The team is also active in distressed M&A transactions; recent mandates in this space include advising a water and sanitation company on the acquisition of distressed assets from companies in the construction and infrastructure sectors.

With a longstanding reputation in banking, financial markets and bankruptcy, Pinheiro Guimarães – Advogados is a key player in the market, enjoying solid relationships with major banks and financial institutions, which draw on the team’s expertise in debt refinancing and restructuring transactions. Ivie Moura Alves and the ‘very commercialEduardo Augusto Mattar represented the bank lenders and noteholders in connection with the judicial reorganisation of two companies in the food and agriculture business. Celso Xavier and António Manuel França Aires represented key client Deloitte as trustee in the R$2.3bn judicial restructuring of Eneva. Luis Gustavo Haddad heads the practice at Lilla, Huck, Otranto, Camargo Advogados, which is instructed by creditors, shareholders, investors and debtors; it services a client base of large Brazilian companies across diverse industries, with particular expertise in the agribusiness sector. A multi-disciplinary team which included Haddad and Bruno Robert advised the controlling shareholders of an automotive components supplier on the company’s judicial restructuring. The ‘highly qualified and competent’ team at Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados is a popular choice for financial institutions, and also services a broader client base of distressed companies, potential investors and other parties including fiduciary agents and trustees. Sergio Bermudes is a well-known name; other key figures in the department include Marcelo Lamego Carpenter and Marcio Vieira Souto Costa Ferreira.

TozziniFreire Advogados has a broad restructuring and insolvency practice, with recent highlights including several creditor-side mandates in judicial reorganisation proceedings. In a headline case, the team represented OAS in its judicial reorganisation. Joel Luís Thomaz Bastos’ team was bolstered by the arrival of Ivo Waisberg and Ricardo Pomeranc Matsumoto from Costa e Tavares Paes Sociedade de Advogados. Driven and committed’, the sizeable team at Galdino, Coelho, Mendes Advogados receives instructions from debtors, shareholders and creditors, with its most significant mandates on the debtor side; recent highlights include acting for Banco Cruzeiro do Sul in its high-profile liquidation. Flavio Galdino is ‘widely known and recognised for his knowledge of bankruptcy and insolvency law’.

Lefosse Advogados is known for its track record in creditor-side mandates, while other recent instructions include representing Deloitte as trustee in the judicial reorganisation of Renuka Group. Raphael Nehin Corrêa heads the multi-disciplinary practice, which was bolstered by the arrival from Veirano Advogados of litigators Pedro Soares Maciel and Carlo Verona. Since publication the team has been strengthened further with the hire of Roberto Zarour, who joins from an in-house position as head of Banco Itaú BBA’s restructuring and debt recovery legal area.

High-quality’ firm RZ Advogados services a large client base of local and multinational financial institutions, which turn to it for assistance in relation to debt renegotiations and bankruptcy proceedings. Practice head Fábio Pascual Zuanon and Guilherme Oliveira Afonso are recommended.

Soares Bumachar Chagas Barros Advogados maintains an active restructuring practice, attracting instructions from debtors, creditors and other parties in contentious and out-of-court proceedings. Noted practice head Laura Mendes Bumachar is ‘innovative, intelligent and objective’, and is currently representing a major supplier in complex judicial recovery proceedings.

Leveraging the wider firm’s relationships with financial institutions, Souza, Cescon, Barrieu & Flesch Advogados attracts instructions from creditors in judicial and extra-judicial restructuring proceedings, and also maintains a significant debtor-side practice. 2015 also saw the team act for a number of potential investors in distressed M&A transactions. Known for its broad international expertise, Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown is a popular choice for multinational financial institutions in judicial reorganisations, and has recently represented Deloitte as bankruptcy trustee in several cases. Litigation specialists Leonardo Morato and Luciana Celidonio have notable track records in this space. Adriana Dias left the firm in 2015.

DDSA – De Luca, Derenusson, Schuttoff e Azevedo Advogados attracts a steady flow of instructions from bankruptcy trustees, creditors and debtors. Distressed M&A also features; the team is currently advising a company in the sugar and alcohol sector on the acquisition of certain assets out of bankruptcy. Luis Augusto Roux Azevedo and Fernando Gomes dos Reis Lobo are recommended.

Specialist bankruptcy and restructuring firm Mandel Advocacia draws on 30 years of experience in the market to represent distressed companies and their shareholders in bankruptcy proceedings. José Fernando Mandel and Julio Kahan Mandel are the names to note.

Souto Correa Cesa Lummertz & Amaral Advogadosunderstands the client’s needs, the business perspective and the sense of urgency’. It services a broad client base of local and international companies which provide a steady flow of instructions in restructuring and credit recovery proceedings. Gilberto Deon Corrêa Júnior recently represented a client in the agricultural sector in its extra-judicial liquidation process.

Corporate lawyers André de Almeida and Natalie Yoshida are the names to note at Almeida Advogados, which assists debtors and creditors in reorganisations, and investors in the acquisition of distressed assets.

Noted aviation firm Bernardi & Schnapp Advogados has experience representing banks and suppliers in judicial and extra-judicial reorganisations and credit recovery proceedings. Bruno Delgado Chiaradia heads the practice.

Costa e Tavares Paes Sociedade de Advogados has a noted history in insolvency work, and handles judicial and out-of-court restructurings. Litigator Carolina Xavier da Silveira Moreira made partner in 2015.

The two-partner team at MHM Advogados comprises corporate expert Antonio Carlos Mazzuco and Luiz Antonio Varela Donelli, who was promoted in 2015. The pair recently advised a media company on the acquisition of assets from a company in a judicial reorganisation.

The bankruptcy team at Siqueira Castro Advogados services a broad client base in credit recovery matters, debt renegotiations and company restructurings.
