Campos Mello Advogados is ‘One of the best law firms in real estate’ and attracts praise for its ‘hands-on approach’ and ‘commitment’. Though the real estate market in Brazil has remained quiet, the team stayed busy throughout 2016, attracting instructions from real estate developers and corporate clients in various sectors. Rafael Jordão Bussière ‘understands the needs of his clients, has a complete overview of the industry, and has substantial knowledge of each and every legal aspect on any real estate deal’; and Theo Keiserman de Abreu is noted for his ‘deep knowledge’. Most of the team are based in the firm’s Rio de Janeiro office, from where Fabio Perrone Campos Mello heads the practice. Ivandro Ristum Trevelim is a key contact in the São Paulo office.

‘Highly qualified in the real estate industry’, the team at Gustavo Padilha Advogados Associados ‘creates value at each step of every project’. Among its highlights in a busy 2016, Luciana Henriques Ismael acted on the acquisition of three properties for the development of a real estate project. Alongside its transactional work, the team assists numerous longstanding clients in day-to-day matters; Mariana Ferreira Neves Monteiro, for instance, regularly assists JCPM with lease agreements, renegotiations of contracts, and other operational issues concerning its seven shopping centres. The sizeable team is split between the firm’s Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo offices; highly recommended name partner Gustavo Pinheiro Guimarães Padilha heads the department from the former, where Luciana Campos Palermo is also based.

PMKA Advogados services a broad range of clients, including developers, property owners, investors and banks. 2016 saw the team advise on numerous M&A deals, sale and leaseback transactions, real estate financings, and property developments. Timberland investment is another area of focus for the practice; among its highlights in this space, Luis Peyser acted for a family-run business in the execution of a rural partnership agreement and timber purchase and sale agreement with a Brazilian company involved in the planting of sustainable forests. Other names to note in the 11-partner team include practice head Fernando Maximiano and Alexandre Assolini Mota, whose areas of expertise include real estate backed securities and REIT public offerings.

The real estate department at Demarest Advogados counts household-name retailers and chains, logistics companies, hospitals and financial institutions among its clients. Its full-service offering is a draw, allowing it to handle a broad range of transactions, and it works in close cooperation with the firm’s capital markets group to assist clients on public offerings of real estate receivables certificates (CRIs). A multi-disciplinary team including senior associate Henrique Anders advised Rede D’Or São Luiz and RB Capital on the acquisition of Clínica Salus and, separately, on the issuance of R$184m and R$132m of CRIs. Adriana Daiuto heads the department.

A key player in the Brazilian real estate market, Duarte Garcia, Caselli Guimarães e Terra Advogados leverages its many years of experience and established client base to ensure a range of engagements. Among its areas of expertise are real estate developments (both commercial and residential), leasing, real estate regularisation, and securitisation transactions. Real estate litigation also features in the team’s workload. Headquartered in São Paulo, the firm has an additional office in Brasília and has associations with several international firms in Lisbon, Miami and elsewhere. Key figures include Marcelo Terra and Lúcia Frias.

Real estate is a traditional area of strength for full-service firm KLA-Koury Lopes Advogados, which added several new clients to its roster in 2016. The team is particularly renowned for its work on the regularisation of rural properties; among several mandates in this area in 2016, it advised Companhia Melhoramentos de São Paulo on the regularisation of 54 million m2 of property in São Paulo. Pedro Cortez and Marc Stalder co-head the practice, which was bolstered by the arrival of Rodrigo Pontes from Bonilha, Ratto e Pontes Advogados. Associate Tomaz Matheus is another active member of the team.

With 23 years of experience in the Brazilian real estate market, Lilla, Huck, Otranto, Camargo Advogados has an impressive track record, handling large transactions involving the sale and purchase of property, real estate development and the regularisation of rural land. The firm’s ‘familiarity with the agribusiness industry’ is a draw, and clients also benefit from the team’s ancillary expertise in environmental law. Practice head Estela Monteiro Soares de Camargo advised Assupero – Associação Unificada de Ensino Renovado Objetivo on the regularisation of certain university campuses, and the lease of real estate to establish and expand campuses in various locations in Brazil. The team also acted for DAPO Empreendimentos Imobiliários on the purchase, construction and sale of certain properties, with Thalita Duarte Henriques Pinto and Amanda Salis Guazzelli among those advising. Thomaz Henrique Monteiro Whately is another key contact.

Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados has ‘an interdisciplinary team of lawyers able to provide clients with robust and comprehensive solutions’. The real estate practice benefits from the firm’s strong corporate department, although the standalone group handles a range of real estate matters beyond the M&A space. Practice head Maria Flavia Seabra Gemperli ‘possesses in-depth knowledge and vast experience’, and is ‘capable of dealing with complex and multi-disciplinary tasks’.

The ‘very business-oriented’ team at Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados has been active in residential, hotel and shopping centre projects, among others, with the firm’s full-service capabilities enabling it to take a multi-disciplinary approach, providing ancillary tax and environmental law assistance. A cross-departmental team that included Otávio Uchôa da Veiga Filho and Mariana Spoto Cobra – who made partner in 2017 – recently advised a landowner on the development of a new real estate project. Other clients include Hines do Brasil Empreendimentos, Blackstone and Jaguar Real Estate Partners. Rossana Fernandes Duarte heads the practice and is highly recommended.

Pinheiro Neto Advogados’ team, which includes two partners and a number of dedicated associates, is praised for its ‘excellent level of service’ and ‘quick answers’. It excels in real estate M&A, and had another busy year in 2016. Luciano Garcia Rossi acted for Bristol-Myers Squibb on the sale of property in São Paulo, while a team of corporate and real estate specialists including Franco Musetti Grotti advised Goldman Sachs on a joint venture with self-storage company Metrofit which involved the indirect acquisition of two real estate assets. Senior associate Martina Zajakoff demonstrates ‘commitment to the values and results of the client’.

At Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown, practice head José Paulo Marzagão is a well-known figure in the Brazilian real estate market. He and senior associate Jessica Nunes de Queiroz were part of a team advising Iguatemi Empresa de Shopping Center on the sale of Shopping Galleria from one subsidiary to another in the context of a corporate reorganisation; and associate Maria Carolina Gelmetti Gimenez and others advised GLP Brasil Empreendimentos e Participações on an association agreement for the construction of various logistics centre warehouses.

Noted for its ‘commitment to the client’ and its ‘fast answers’, TozziniFreire Advogados combines real estate, corporate and capital markets expertise to handle the gamut of issues in property transactions, with experience in both rural and urban projects. Among its varied workload in 2016, it assisted The Estée Lauder Companies, Inc on the expansion of certain brands through the negotiation of new leases and the renewal of previous leases in several shopping centres, with Pablo Meira Queiroz leading the advice. A multi-disciplinary team including Paulo Augusto Furtado Mendonça and senior associate Ben Hur Belmonte Neto advised Jaguar Land Rover on the purchase from Xerox of an industrial site that included commercial buildings and warehouses.

The two-partner team at Veirano Advogados is well-versed in a range of real estate transactions, with particular experience in the hotels and hospitality sector. As well as continuing to work with many of its longstanding clients, it picked up a number of new engagements from clients including BHG Hoteis and LSH Barra Hotel; a team led by Raphael Moreira Espírito Santo advised the latter on the development of Trump Hotel in Rio de Janeiro. Elsewhere, Rodrigo de Castro has been advising Prumo Logística in relation to an electricity transmission line to supply the Porto do Açu region.

The sizeable practice at Amaral e Nicolau had another busy year in 2016, advising on property acquisitions and real estate projects, both commercial and residential. Real estate litigation is another mainstay. José Vicente Amaral Filho and Júlio Nicolau Filho are the two partners in the team, while key names at associate level include Lumy Tahara and Flávia Regina Bosio.

BMA – Barbosa, Müssnich, Aragão’s well-known M&A capabilities make for a steady flow of corporate real estate transactions. The real estate practice has experience in a multitude of projects, including shopping centres, business centres, hospitals and hotels. Cristiane Mamprin de Castro Guerra advised RCN Empreendimentos Imobiliários on a partnership agreement for the development of an urban allotment. Cristiana Moreira co-heads the practice.

Real estate is a key area of focus for Navarro Advogados, which has a strong track record in property sales, purchases and development. Alexandre Tadeu Navarro Pereira Gonçalves and Juliana Rubiniak de Araújo co-head the team, which also draws on the experience of corporate and M&A specialist Elvis Camargo de Brong Mattar.

Stocche Forbes Advogados services a varied client base that includes real estate investors, logistics companies and key players in the agribusiness sector. In one highlight, Fernanda Christina de Souza Rosa advised Xerox on the sale of an industrial site to Jaguar Land Rover. Alexandre Laizo Clápis draws on over 20 years’ experience in real estate law and is a key figure in the department, which works closely with the firm’s tax, infrastructure and project finance experts.

An ‘agile and very specialised’ firm, TCSA Advogados ‘has a deep knowledge of the real estate market’. Tarso Romani advised a new client on the acquisition of two commercial properties in São Paulo. Aloisio Santini is recommended, and other prominent figures in the sizeable team include Eduardo Tristão and Ana Carolina Cavalcante. Since the conclusion of reserarch, Eduardo Tristão has left the firm.

The real estate practice at Trench Rossi Wanatabe has experience in M&A, leasing, procurement, property finance and construction litigation. Practice head Lúcia Veloso Aragão recently advised new client União Norte Brasileira de Educação e Cultura on the regularisation of over 20 properties prior to a sale.

Azevedo Sette Advogados advises on leasing matters, sales and purchases, project development, and property regularisation, drawing on a multi-disciplinary team of corporate, infrastructure and litigation experts. Leonardo Moreira Costa de Souza heads the practice, which includes dedicated associate Alessandra Lima Ganz.

Bicalho e Mollica Advogados handles a range of real estate transactions, advisory matters and litigation from its offices in São Paulo and Brasília. Name partners Rodrigo Cury Bicalho and Luciano Mollica are key contacts.

The ‘very accessible and competent’ team at Cascione, Pulino, Boulos & Santos Advogados is co-headed by Fábio Cascione and Marcos Pulino, and is particularly strong in real estate and capital markets transactions. Senior associate Diego Gonçalves Coelho is recommended.

DDSA – De Luca, Derenusson, Schuttoff e Azevedo Advogados has considerable experience in the agribusiness sector, although its broad client base also takes in major companies in the hotels and hospitality, retail and financial services industries. Luanda Pinto Backheuser and Flavia Bailoni Marcilio Barbosa co-head the practice.

Real estate finance is an area of focus for Felsberg Advogados. It also has a strong reputation in insolvency, and assists clients in relation to the real estate aspects of reorganisations and the sale of distressed property assets. Fernanda Costa do Amaral heads the practice.

In 2016, Fabricio Barreto de Mattos’ team at Gasparini, De Cresci e Nogueira de Lima Advogados advised both new and longstanding clients on property regularisation, real estate M&A clients and leasing issues, among other matters. Aldo de Cresci heads the timberland investment practice.

Goulart & Colepicolo Advogados draws on over ten years’ experience in the Brazilian real estate market, during which time it has built up a solid client base of major property developers, investors and retail companies. João Gilberto Freire Goulart and Cristiano Silva Colepicolo co-head the group from Belo Horizonte and São Paulo respectively.

Under the leadership of Rodrigo Delboni Teixeira, Lobo de Rizzo Advogados advises household-name corporate clients on a range of real estate issues, including the sale and purchase of urban and rural property. Senior associate Daniela de Pontes Andrade is another key figure in the team.

Lobo & Ibeas’ team of ‘real estate experts’ provide an ‘exceptional’ level of service, and are particularly active in the shopping centre sector. José-Ricardo Pereira Lira and Sérgio Vieira Miranda da Silva are highlighted for their strength in real estate litigation.

Daniel Cardoso Gomes and Flávio de Souza Senra are the two partners in the team at Mannrich, Senra e Vasconcelos Advogados (MSV), which also draws on the experience of a pool of dedicated associates. In 2016, the firm advised numerous clients on real estate acquisitions in the state of São Paulo.

Tania Pantano heads the practice at boutique firm Pantano Advogados, which assists its clients in urban and rural land acquisitions and registration matters.

Pinheiro Guimarães – Advogados’ practice takes in securitisation, capital markets and M&A transactions, acting for a number of leading financial institutions. Plinio Pinheiro Guimarães Neto and Bruno Lardosa represented the arrangers in the issuance and public offering of CRIs by RB Capital Companhia de Securitização.

Rolim, Viotti & Leite Campos Advogados services a range of clients including mining, real estate and automotive companies, which turn to the team for assistance on projects and day-to-day matters. Luis Gustavo Miranda is a key contact.

Siqueira Castro – Advogados is well-versed in contentious and non-contentious real estate matters involving both urban and rural land. Carlos Fernando Siqueira Castro, Fábio Coutinho Kurtz and Daniela Soares Domingues are the key figures in the team, which services a range of clients across the agribusiness, real estate, construction and TMT sectors.

The sizeable real estate group at Souto Correa Cesa Lummertz & Amaral Advogados is split across the firm’s Porto Alegre and São Paulo offices, and counts a number of household-name companies among its clients. Gilberto Deon Corrêa Júnior and Fábio Machado Baldissera recently advised a client on the regularisation of its industrial plants.

Souza, Cescon, Barrieu & Flesch Advogados invested in its real estate group through the promotion of Marcos Lopes Prado to partner in 2016. The team has particular strength in real estate related M&A transactions, although the practice also covers property regularisation, lease agreements and rural real estate developments, among other areas.
