The ‘dedicated and engaged’ team at Trench Rossi Wanatabe saw organic growth with the promotion to partner of two associates: Thales Stucky and Reinaldo Ravelli. The team has significant senior-level resource, including global head of tax Simone Dias Musa and tax litigation head Paulo Rogério Sehn, and is well served by a number of experienced associates. As part of a strong international office network, the team is particularly active in cross-border transactional work, and it also has a notable tax litigation practice. The ‘excellent’ tax department at Veirano Advogados is highlighted for its ‘ability to adapt to the client’s culture and way of doing business’. In 2016 it saw a balance between tax litigation and non-contentious tax matters, where it acted for longstanding clients across numerous industries. Among a string of highlights, João Agripino Maia represented Companhia Energética do Ceará (Coelce) in administrative proceedings concerning social contributions on activities related to electricity distribution; and Marco Monteiro advised Microsoft on the tax aspects of the sale of its manufacturing facility in Manaus to Flextronics. 2016 was another busy year for the tax department at BMA – Barbosa, Müssnich, Aragão, which attracted instructions from new and longstanding clients in tax litigation and a range of non-contentious tax matters. The team saw organic growth through the promotion of three partners, including the ‘very talented’ Luiza Sampaio de Lacerda Benjó. Transactional highlights included advising Kroton Educacional on its binding offer for Estácio Participações; José Otavio Haddad Faloppa advised on complex tax issues including the tax treatment of the goodwill expected to arise as a result of the combination. One of the most reliable firms’ in the market, Bichara Advogados is particularly adept in tax litigation, and now fields five partners following the promotion of Pedro Teixeira de Siqueira Neto and Wolmar Francisco Amélio Esteves. Recent work saw a team including Francisco Carlos Rosas Giardina, Sandro Machado dos Reis and senior associate Fernando Gomes de Souza e Silva defend AMBEV in complex ICMS-related litigation. Name partner and member of the Consulting Council of the Brazilian Academy of Tax Law, Luis Gustavo Bichara, and senior associate Giuseppe Pecorari Melotti is also recommended.

Clients praise tax boutique BRATAX – Brazuna Ruschmann e Soriano Sociedade de Advogados for its ‘deep knowledge in all topics’, ‘prompt answers’ and ‘fair costs’. The comprehensive practice covers direct tax, indirect tax and international taxation issues, with experience advising companies across economic segments including technology, chemicals, cosmetics and energy, among others. Cristiano Frederico Ruschmann has been providing ongoing advice to a client in the TMT sector on the taxation of new technologies. Other key figures include José Luis Ribeiro Brazuna and the ‘transparent and dedicated’ Ciro César Soriano de Oliveira. ‘Very responsive’ of counsel Kátia Soriano de Oliveira Mihara and ‘clear and effective’ associate Antonio Moreno also attract praise.

Highlighted for its ‘technical knowledge of civil, labour and tax law’, TozziniFreire Advogados acts for clients ranging from major multinationals to high-net-worth individuals and families. Among its transactional highlights, Ana Cláudia Akie Utumi took a lead role acting for Femsa Group on its acquisition of Atlas Transporte e Logística. Elsewhere, Vinicius Jucá Alves acted for Genomma Lab in a high-profile case concerning the classification of certain products and applicable taxes. Clients of Rothmann Sperling Padovan Duarte Advogados appreciate its ‘business-oriented advice’ and the ability to have a ‘close relationship with the partners and senior staff’. Sacha Calmon e Misabel Derzi Consultores e Advogados has a solid reputation in the Brazilian market, and significant geographic coverage thanks for its network of offices across the country. Name partners Sacha Calmon Navarro Coêlho and Misabel Derzi are among the key figures in the team, whose sector strengths include telecoms, transportation and energy.

Siqueira Castro – Advogados has significant geographic coverage, and covers tax consultancy and litigation. Bianca Xavier, in the Rio de Janeiro office, is ‘a renowned lawyer with a high degree of technical knowledge’. Maucir Fregonesi Júnior heads the practice from São Paulo, and Marluzi Andrea Costa Barros is a key contact in Salvador.

Antonio Carlos Guidoni Filho’s tax department at Vella Pugliese Buosi e Guidoni Advogados expanded in January 2017 with the hire of highly experienced partner Fábio Nieves Barreira. The team services a varied client base including many companies in the energy and sugar and alcohol sectors, and is particularly renowned for tax litigation. In May 2017, the firm announced its strategic alliance with multinational firm Dentons.

Clients appreciate Almeida Advogados’ ‘concise and to-the-point advice’ and ability to ‘anticipate problems and legal issues that might arise’. The team is well-versed in judicial and administrative tax litigation. The ‘very dedicated’ Homero dos Santos is based in São Paulo, while Leonardo Vinicius Correia de Melo is the name to note in Rio de Janeiro.

Tax is a core area for Araújo e Policastro Advogados. It expanded its practice with the hire of Pedro Guilherme Modenese Casquet, who has experience as a tax professor and judge. Sylvio Fernando Paes de Barros Júnior heads the team, which acts for clients in the mining, healthcare and cosmetics sectors, among others.

Anna Flávia de Azevedo Izelli Greco and senior associate Rodrigo Prado Gonçalves attract praise.

L.O. Baptista Advogados’ ‘proactive and committed’ team covers tax planning, consulting and litigation. Marcos Ribeiro Barbosa’s recent work includes defending a company against a tax assessment filed in São Paulo. Daniela Melo Fassheber and Plinio Pinheiro Guimarães Neto ‘provide impeccable assistance, even on short notice’.

Ronaldo Martins & Advogados’ tax practice covers a range of contentious and non-contentious matters. Name partner Ronaldo Corrêa Martins leads the team, and Marta Arias Díaz heads the dedicated international desk.

The ‘cohesive and high-performance group’ at Souto Correa Cesa Lummertz & Amaral Advogados is ‘highly qualified in tax consultancy and litigation’, and was recently bolstered by the hire of several new associates. Henry Gonçalves Lummertz and Anderson Trautmann Cardoso are recommended.

Transactional tax has long been an area of expertise at Stocche Forbes Advogados, with Renato Souza Coelho specialising in tax consultancy and deal structuring.
