Boutique firm DR&A Advogadosmatches the expertise and level of service offered by large competitors but at better value’, and is noted for its ‘good understanding of the international market’. Dinir Salvador Rios da Rocha is a ‘leading expert’ in directors’ and officers’ (D&O) liability insurance. Also recommended are head of litigation Paulo Bezerra de Menezes Reiff, Danilo Machado and Julia Santoro de Camargo Donato. At senior associate level, Ricardo Ribeiro da Luz Loew heads the surety bond claims practice; Lívia Santos Mathiazi handles insurance and reinsurance litigation; and Carolina Oger Affonso de Almeida has a broad non-contentious insurance practice.

Well established as a key player in the insurance market, Ernesto Tzirulnik Advocacia is home to leading specialists such as Ernesto Tzirulnik and Paulo Luiz de Toledo Piza, who are both well-known practitioners and have authored several textbooks on insurance law in Brazil. While maintaining its boutique size and status, the firm also assists clients in ancillary areas of law including corporate, competition and environmental.

Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados covers the gamut of insurance and reinsurance work, and continues to be instructed by major insurance companies. The sizeable team has the resources to specialise in insurance transactions, regulation and claims; in the latter area, claims adjustment specialist Cassio Gama Amaral is the name to note. Recent work for regulatory expert Camila Leal Calais includes advising AIG Seguros on amendments to its environmental liability insurance. In a separate matter for the same client, Thomaz del Castillo Barroso Kastrup and the highly rated Marcelo Mansur Haddad assisted in the negotiations, drafting of contracts and regulatory filings concerning the transfer of an insurance portfolio from AIG Seguros to Assurant Seguradora. Luciana Dias Prado has strong experience in insurance and pensions regulation.

The insurance and reinsurance department at Demarest Advogados is led by highly experienced partner Marcia Cicarelli Barbosa de Oliveira. She and senior associate Laura Pelegrini represented Chubb Seguros in litigation brought by an oil company claiming for the retrospective and prospective review of an insurance premium. The firm also stands out for its insurance-sector corporate and M&A practice, which is headed by André Alarcon. Senior associate Camila Affonso Prado is another key member of the team.

Mandaliti Advogados draws on over 20 years of experience and counts Braskem, Seguradora Líder, Cosesp Seguros and Telefónica among its clients. For the latter, a team including Renato Tadeu Rondina Mandaliti, Ademilson Silva and Thiago Campos drafted a legal opinion on the legal and regulatory aspects of a business model for a virtual platform for the sale of insurance products.

Among the best-known Brazilian firms in the sector, Pellon & Associados Advocacia has carved out a name for itself through its representation of major insurers. Litigation is a standout area, and additional areas of practice include labour, tax and corporate law. Luís Felipe Pellon and Sergio Ruy Barroso de Mello are the names to note.

Based in São Paulo and with 20 years’ experience, Penteado Mendonça e Char Advocacia is a well-known name in the Brazilian insurance market. It represents insurers, reinsurers and other financial institutions in complex litigation and arbitration, and also provides insurance consultancy and legal opinions. Antonio Penteado Mendonça and Armando Vicente Mesquita Char are the name partners.

Sitting within the firm’s financial institutions group, the insurance team at Pinheiro Neto Advogados provides a ‘very high’ level of service and ‘adds value’. It has notable experience advising insurance companies on the establishment of subsidiaries and the development of new products. The firm’s reputation in M&A also leads to a steady flow of instructions in insurance-sector corporate transactions. Among its recent work highlights, Diógenes Mendes Gonçalves Neto acted for Assurant Seguradora on the acquisition of AIG Seguros’ affinity insurance portfolio. Bruno Balduccini and Fernando dos Santos Zorzo are other key partners in the team, and senior associate Roberto Panucci is also recommended.

São Paulo based firm Santos Bevilaqua Advogados specialises in insurance, reinsurance, healthcare and pensions, with complementary expertise in corporate, labour and tax law matters, both contentious and non-contentious. Its client base has an international slant and includes insurers and other financial services providers. Marco Antonio Bevilaqua, Daniela de Matos Rodrigues and João Marcelo dos Santos are key partners in the team.

Vieira Rechtman Advogados was established in 2017 by ‘very knowledgeable and business-oriented lawyer’ Marcelo Vieira Rechtman, who was previously a partner at Cascione, Pulino, Boulos & Santos Advogados. The team provides a range of corporate, regulatory and litigation services to its clients, which include insurers, brokers and pension funds. André Luiz Andrade dos Santos joined the team in 2018 through the firm’s merger with Santos & Ramos Advogados.

Pensions, health insurance and product liability are particular areas of focus at Azevedo Sette Advogados. Ordélio Azevedo Sette is advising Mapfre and several subsidiaries on insurance and regulatory matters in a number of strategic lawsuits. Other members of the multidisciplinary team are Fabricio Faggiani Dib, João Capanema Barbosa Filho, and Jaqueline Suryan, who joined from Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados in April 2018.

Insurance and reinsurance is a focal area at Chalfin, Goldberg, Vainboim & Fichtner Advogados Associados, which acts for national and international companies and is a popular choice among foreign law firms. Ilan Goldberg heads the practice, and works alongside a team of dedicated senior associates including João Paulo Sá de Freitas and Rodrigo Gomes de Sousa.

Luis Augusto Roux Azevedo leads the insurance practice at DDSA - De Luca, Derenusson, Schuttoff e Azevedo Advogados and is supported by a small team of specialist associates. Clients include insurers and insureds, which seek the team’s assistance in a range of contentious and non-contentious matters.

The multidisciplinary team at Levy & Salomão draws on expertise in banking and finance, capital markets, tax and social security. It regularly represents clients – including insurance companies and other corporate clients – in litigation, and has developed a niche in aviation insurance. Eduardo Salomão Neto heads the team, which includes Vinicius Branco and José Arnaldo da Fonseca Filho.

Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados combines broad expertise in banking and finance, investment funds and capital markets. In addition to specialist insurance consulting, it assists clients in loss adjustment proceedings and other insurance litigation. Among its recent work, Eduardo Avila de Castro and associate Thais de Gobbi advised a client on insurance and reinsurance regulations concerning cut-through provisions, sanctions clauses and other matters.

The ‘highly qualified professionals’ at Schalch Sociedade de Advogados are noted for their punctuality and ‘great sense of ethics’. The team is equipped to handle a range of insurance litigation and advisory matters. Débora Schalch and Tatiana Algodoal Rosa attract praise.

Siqueira Castro – Advogados is particularly active in the aviation and health insurance sectors. Much of its work is contentious; the team has a notable track record in civil lawsuits and administrative proceedings. Fábio Coutinho Kurtz and André Frossard Albuquerque jointly lead the practice, which counts financial institutions and healthcare companies among its clients.

Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown advises on insurance and reinsurance claims, products and transactions, and is particularly recommended for aviation insurance and liability. Julio Costa and associate Eduardo Penna – who ‘dedicate a high level of attention’ and provide ‘timely responses’ – recently advised Swiss Re on a new contingent liability policy.

Highly specialised boutiqueTavares Advogados is experienced in insurance litigation and loss adjustment procedures, and also provides regulatory and corporate advice to its insurance-sector clients. Leading figures in the ‘client-oriented’ team are the ‘very talented’ and ‘well-renowned’ André Tavares, and the ‘brilliantDaniel Chacur de Miranda, who ‘provides accurate and innovative legal opinions’.

Under the leadership of Anna Tavares de Mello, Trench Rossi Watanabe provides legal and regulatory advice to major international insurance companies. 2017 was another busy year for the practice; in one highlight, de Mello, senior associate Luciana Vianna Pereira and associate Victor Sigaud assisted Tokio Marine in its registration as an occasional reinsurer in Brazil, including acting in administrative and legal proceedings.

Veirano Advogados’ insurance practice was bolstered by the arrival of Felipe Bastos, who re-joined the firm from PVS Advogados. It stands out for its focus on policyholders, which it assists in a range of contentious and non-contentious matters. Also noted is Fábio Figueira, who has a broad corporate and insurance practice. However, senior associate Fernanda Tostes Malta has left the firm.

Dispute resolution firm Andrade & Fichtner Advogados draws on several decades of experience in the market, with insurance litigation among its areas of strength. Name partner José Antonio Fichtner and Sergio Nelson Mannheimer are key contacts.

Bichara Advogados established an insurance practice in January 2018 with the hire of former KLA-Koury Lopes Advogados partner Fabio Ramos. His clients include insurance and reinsurance companies and healthcare operators.

Campos Mello Advogados launched its insurance and reinsurance practice in January 2017 with the hire of Marcella Hill from DLA Piper in London. ‘A lawyer committed to the client’s success’, Hill ‘brings to the table a unique combination of national and international legal expertise’.

Ricardo Botelho heads the insurance group at Cascione, Pulino, Boulos & Santos Advogados, which advises corporate clients on the insurance aspects of M&A transactions. Among his recent work, Botelho advised Weener Plastics on insurance matters related to its acquisition of Orange Products Brazil.

Castro, Barros, Sobral, Gomes AdvogadosDaniela Alves Portugal Duque Estrada has broad tax and insurance expertise and advises on contentious and non-contentious matters. Clients include insurers, reinsurers and corporate clients from a range of sectors.

Litigation boutique Raphael Miranda Advogados has strong experience in insurance adjustment loss procedures and indemnity lawsuits, where it achieves ‘excellent results for its clients’. Raphael Miranda and Pedro Ivo Mello are recommended.

Leading litigation firm Sergio Bermudes Advogados is well versed in insurance disputes, with particular strength in the areas of pensions and health, life and vehicle insurance.     The new anti-money laundering ( AML ) law of the UAE took effect at the end of October 2018. Containing features recommended by the Financial Action Task Force ( FATF ), the new law introduces subtle but important changes to the AML landscape in the UAE.

    The UAE federal government has recently issued a raft of important legislation, addressing and in many ways updating areas of law that are key to businesses in the jurisdiction.     Earlier this year, the Israel Tax Authority (ITA) issued two circulars, one on the taxation of digital tokens and the second addressing the taxation of utility tokens in initial coin offerings (ICOs). Additionally, in March, the Israel Securities Authority (ISA) released a detailed interim report by the Committee for the Regulation of Public Offerings of Decentralized Cryptocurrency Coins (Report) (with a follow-up report due to come out around October 2018). Moreover, it is expected that before the end of 2018, legislation will come into force that for the first time will see Israeli primary legislation define virtual currencies as financial assets and mandate licensing for related services, as is later discussed in detail.
