Position

Athanasia joined the Firm in 2001 and is Joint Head of the Banking, Finance & Capital Markets group. At the core of her practice is vast experience in structuring, drafting, negotiating and advising on the feasibility and implementation of international financial transactions, including on security and hedging arrangements.

She has been working on the legal and regulatory aspects of the development of a secondary market of non-performing loans in the portfolios of Greek banks and has been involved in most transactions of this type in the Greek market. Athanasia has significant experience in advising corporates and international and domestic credit and financial institutions on financial restructurings and insolvency proceedings.

Her clients include all the major banks and financial institutions that are active in the Greek market and she has acted in innovative and ground breaking deals which have paved the way for future transactions in the banking sector.

Bernitsas Law¬†is, among other work, particularly active in the non-performing loans space, particularly advising buyers on NPL portfolio transfers. A notable highlight was representing Intrum Justitia on acquiring ‚ā¨1.5bn of diversified unsecured consumer loans from Eurobank, the first NPL transfer from a Greek systemic bank. Turning to more traditional financial work, the firm advised Astir Group, including its sponsors AGC Equity Partners, on a ‚ā¨265m bond loan to refinance existing debt for the refurbishment of the Astir Palace Hotel. Team heads¬†Nikos Papachristopoulos¬†and¬†Athanasia Tsene¬†enjoy excellent reputations, as does¬†Panayotis Bernitsas.

Bernitsas Law has an excellent team that is favoured by debtors and creditors.  Recently, it advised doBank on the establishment of a ground-breaking servicing platform for managing the the exposure of the four systemic banks to non-performing loans lent to SMEs. The firm also advised Cyprus Popular Bank on its divestment strategy, including the respective sales of Marfin Bank's Serbian, Ukrainian and Romanian businesses. Lambros Belessis and Athanasia Tsene jointly the team.
