Baker McKenzie provides ‘good quality advice along with excellent responsiveness and flexibility’. Practice head David Díaz recently acted for construction giant Ferrovial, co-ordinating advice on union and labour matters covering several jurisdictions from the firm’s Madrid office. Fermín Guardiola is experienced in negotiating collective bargaining agreements; Mireia Sabaté is the contact in Barcelona.

Cuatrecasas is the main employment adviser to several leading Spanish companies such as Mango and BBVA. Jordi Puigbó heads the team while Salvador del Rey is an expert in collective agreements and dismissals. Ignacio Jabato recently represented Sidenor Aceros Especiales before the Spanish High Court (Audiencia Nacional), resulting in favourable agreements with unions regarding employment suspension measures.

Excellent’ employment boutique Abdón Pedrajas & Molero acts for several leading multinationals and is noted for ‘its success rate in litigation, availability and area knowledge’. The firm specialises in complex restructuring advice, high-profile employment disputes (including executive claims) and collective redundancy matters. A recent highlight included representing supermarket Dia in several collective court cases regarding collective bargaining agreements. Sonia Cortés heads the rapidly expanding team.

Clifford Chance provides ‘a proactive and realistic analysis’ of contentious and non-contentious matters. Counsel Juan Calvente has ‘a great technical understanding of the applicable legislation’ and is strong in advising finance clients; he is acting for Santander on a cross-border executive dismissal procedure.

DLA Piper LLP’s 12-lawyer practice has the ‘ability to handle complex matters and sensitive claims’. The firm is experienced in employment litigation, including collective dismissal claims, and advises on labour aspects of corporate restructurings. Clients include Alfonso Gallardo Group. Managing partner and leading employment expert Pilar Menor has ‘a tactical approach’.

Ceca Magán Abogados specialises in employment law and is known for its litigation practice, which acts for large listed companies. The firm provides ongoing labour advice to Grupo Vips (which operates Starbucks in Spain) and to Repsol. Founding partner Esteban Ceca Magán and labour department head Enrique Ceca Gómez-Arevalillo are the key contacts.

With a large team of 41 lawyers, Deloitte Legal’s ‘quality service helps clients succeed while providing value for money’. Fernando Bazán heads the department and David-Isaac Tobíabrings an excellent strategic vision’ to the Barcelona office. Key mandates include acting for Catalan jewellery giant Tous on employment matters relating to its expansion into China.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo provides ‘a very good service with quick responses, offering tailor-made and flexible advice’. Ignacio Campos heads the team and Juan Antonio de Lanzas is the contact in Valencia. Clients include Pfizer and Nike.

Hogan Lovells International LLP provides ongoing advice to well-known clients such as Amazon, eBay and Campofrío. It recently assisted Korean Air with employment matters, including collective bargaining agreements, regarding the establishment of a new centre in Barcelona. Group head Luis Enrique de la Villa and Silvia Bauzá, who is experienced in collective conflict negotiations, are the names to note.

Pérez-Llorca acts for clients in a wide range of sectors, including retail, energy, construction and banking. Practice head Luis Enrique Fernández Pallarés recently led advice to Endesa (part of Enel) on the negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement affecting more than 9,900 employees. Other highlights include acting for Expedia on the implementation of its restructuring process.

Andersen Tax & Legal has strengthened its employment offering through several new hires, including Alfredo Aspra, from CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo. Key mandates included acting for Isolux Corsán on employment restructuring matters, including collective dismissals of around 600 employees. Other clients include Ferrovial and Catalunya Banc (now part of BBVA).

Araoz & Rueda is regularly instructed by clients in the retail, spirit and food sectors, on contentious and non-contentious matters. In the finance space, it recently acted for Spanish-based private equity fund Black Toro Capital on labour matters relating to its acquisition of Marypaz. Of counsel Alfonso Suárez, who has ‘exceptional knowledge, solid experience and commercial skills’, heads the team.

EY Abogados advises a wide range of clients across several key industries, with particular expertise in the banking sector. Practice head Raúl García is leading advice to Pescanova on the review of labour and social security matters affecting more than 100 employees.

Simmons & Simmons LLP has ‘excellent knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, with a practical and fast response to day-to-day consultations’.
