Cuatrecasas covers all aspects of insurance, including regulatory, transactional, tax, litigation and labour-related matters. In an ongoing instruction, the team advised Mutua Madrileña on its alliance with Caixabank. Eduardo Ramírez heads the team and a strong second line includes Carlos Bonhome, Alfonso Reina and Rebeca Rodríguez.

Praised for its ‘professionalism and availability’ to clients, Garrigues’ team advises on the full range of the insurance sector. Àlvaro López-Jorrín and Mónica Martín de Vidales head the team, with Fernando Vives and Javier Urbano are also key members of the group. Recent mandates include acting for Allianz on the extension and reinforcement of its non-life distribution agreement with Banco Popular.

Hogan Lovells International LLP has ‘deservedly earned a name for its advice on insurance matters, especially in litigation-related instructions’. Practice head Joaquín Ruiz Echauri led the team advising Liberty Seguros on its PLN92.3m sale of Liberty Ubezpieczenia to Axa. Up-and-comer Felipe Vázquez is noted.

Uría Menéndez’s insurance practice receives praise for its ‘remarkable professionalism paired with a deep understanding of the Spanish insurance industry’. In one key mandate the team advised Mutua Madrileña on its €209m acquisition of a 40% stake in leading Chilean insurer, BCI Seguros. José María Segovia and Guillermo San Pedro lead the practice.

Under the leadership of María José Menéndez and of counsel Francisco de León, the team at Ashurst LLP has won renown for its capabilities in contentious and non-contentious matters – especially those with a cross-border element. Work highlights include advising Dunas Capital on the acquistion of asset management and invesment services group Inverseguros.

A visible actor in the Spanish insurance sector’, Clifford Chance’s practice is led by corporate specialist Jaime Sánchez. The ‘proactive group’ recently advised Mapfre in connection with the issuance of notes to the value of €600m.

Clyde & Co LLP continues to cement its standing in the Spanish insurance arena. The team has vast expertise advising Lloyd’s syndicates, and local and international insurers and reinsurers, on a variety of complex and high-end contentious instructions. Work highlights include advising Axa Seguros on claims totalling €4m related to the collapse of Madrid’s ‘Las Ventas’ bullfighting ring. Ignacio Figuerol, Ricardo Garrido, Jesús Iglesias and Pablo Guillén are all recommended.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo Abogados has strenghened its capabilities with the hire of Pablo Muelas, a former deputy director of insurance regulations at the Ministry of Economy. Recent work saw the team advise HCCI on a €140m dispute. Fernando Igartua and Iñigo Erláiz are noted for their expertise.

Jesús Vélez leads the practice at Kennedys, which counts major insurers and reinsurers among its clients. José María Araúz is another key member of the practice group, which has outstanding expertise in contentious insurance instructions.

Albors Galiano Portales primarily advises clients on property damage and business interruption instructions. Eduardo Albors and Javier Galiano are noted.

Benefiting from the firm’s international network, DAC Beachcroft LLP is involved in some of the market’s most notable insurance claims. The 18-lawyer team includes three partners and is led by José María Alvarez-Cienfuegos.
