Ashurst LLP's team stands out for its ‘personal and professional skills’ and provides ‘quick and detailed feedback when it’s needed’. Specialist in corporate law and litigation María José Menéndez leads the practice, which includes ‘personable and knowledgeable’ counsel Francisco de León, who has expertise in bancassurance and reinsurance. Also notable is experienced associate Rafael Fernández. The team advised Aegon Group on its agreements with Banco Santander relating to the extension of the bancassurance alliance between Aegon and the Santander Group. In another highlight, the department advised Aviva Europe on the sale of its stake in life insurance company and pension fund manager Cajamurcia Vida y Pensiones de Seguros y Reaseguros.

Clifford Chance's ‘domestic and international experience’ is combined with an ability to ‘coordinate different work areas exceptionally well’. Advising across the full range of insurance-related matters, the firm specialises in multi-jurisdictional transactions. The practice has ‘some of the best lawyers in Spain that do a brilliant job’. This includes counsel Jaime Sánchez, who is an expert in insurance and reinsurance matters and is known for his transactional and regulatory experience. He leads the team with the ‘intelligent and precise’ José Antonio Caínzos, who has ‘a depth of knowledge in legislation’. The department advised Zurich Group on the voluntary winding-up and liquidation of Aide Asistencia, Seguros y Reaseguros, and assisted Mapfre with the setting up of a fund for real estate investment in Europe. Cuatrecasas specialises in insurance matters related to M&A transactions and the restructuring processes of insurance groups; it also has particular expertise in insurance litigation. Practice head Eduardo Ramírez focuses on corporate and finance-related matters in the space. Counsel Carlos Bonhome, who is experienced in the financial services sector, and Rebeca Rodríguez, who has expertise in insurance company taxation and social welfare, are other names to note. The practice is advising Aegon on tax matters related to its agreement to become Banco Santander’s leading insurance partner. In another recent highlight, the department is representing Vicinay Cadenas against a claim by Lloyd’s Syndicates and Petrobras of America, which is related to economic losses sustained by the failure of an exploration and extraction operation.

Specialised in insurance’, Hogan Lovells International LLP has ‘huge knowledge of the industry and a great relationship with the regulator’. Litigation expert Luis Alfonso Fernández leads the practice together with Joaquín Ruiz Echauri, who has particular expertise in corporate and regulatory matters related to insurance. Also notable in the team is senior associate Felipe Vázquez, who focuses on bancassurance alliances and cross-border work, and Jaime Boll, who was promoted to partner in 2018. The department advised Allianz on the acquisition of Multiasistencia, a group of companies in the field of repair-in-kind activities. In another recent highlight, the firm handled CNP Partners' acquisition of a majority holding in InsurTech iSalud, a health insurance broker and insurance services comparison site.

J&A Garrigues SLP covers the spectrum of work in the insurance sector, particularly specialising in bancassurance joint ventures. The practice is led by corporate expert Àlvaro López-Jorrín and Mónica Martín de Vidales, who has particular experience in M&A-related matters. Also notable are experienced principal associate Félix Ferreño and senior associate Luis Covarrubias. The team is advising Asnef on the legislative process of the insurance distribution directive in Spain. Other key clients include Allianz, Generali, Zurich and Barclays.

The ‘knowledgeable and experienced’ group at Uría Menéndez is recommended for its ‘client-focused approach and availability’. Working across the sector, the practice has particular expertise in cross-border transactions, bancassurance and litigation. José María Segovia leads the team with the ‘very smartGuillermo San Pedro, who is known as ‘a good negotiator’. Also notable is experienced senior associate Alejandro Linares. The firm advised on the bancassurance agreements signed by Banco Santander with Aegon, after the acquisition of Banco Popular by Banco Santander, and assisted Ibercaja Banco with the acquisition of Reale’s shareholding stake in non-life insurer CAI Seguros Generales. Clyde & Co LLP specialises in advising Lloyd's syndicates, as well as Spanish and international insurance and reinsurance companies, on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters in the insurance sector. Ignacio Figuerol is notable in this area and has particular expertise in reinsurance disputes.

DAC Beachcroft LLP has experience in high-profile professional indemnity and product liability matters, as well as handling major catastrophes for insurers and international reinsurers operating in the Spanish market. In addition, the firm has an international cyber claims group and an innovative breach response practice. The team is led by multi-jurisdictional claims management expert José María Álvarez-Cienfuegos; José María Pimentel, who specialises in personal injury and professional indemnity-related claims; and Beatriz Rodríguez, whose expertise covers insurance, real estate and related litigation.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo has ‘outstanding knowledge’ and provides ‘tailor-made solutions’, particularly specialising in corporate transactional work in the sector. The team has ‘vast experience’ and provides clear advice and is led by insurance regulation expert Pablo Muelas, and Ángel Varela, who focuses on the insurance, banking and securities markets. Also notable is Iñigo Erláiz, who is experienced in insurance-related M&A matters. In recent highlights, the practice is advising Admiral on the setting up of an insurance undertaking and insurance agent in Spain, and is assisting Sabadell’s insurance distribution business with adapting to the new legal framework. Herbert Smith Freehills LLP acts for corporate policyholders, brokers, insurers and reinsurers. Expert in comparative law Paulino Fajardo leads the practice and focuses on cross-border disputes. Also notable in the team is recently promoted counsel Alejandra Galdos, who focuses on policyholders’ claims in the energy sector, and advises on construction and engineering policies; and senior associate Juan Pedro Beneyto-Guillamas, who joined from the Spanish insurance market regulatory authority in 2018. The department advised Red Eléctrica de España on damages arising from the failure of an electricity transformer in the Ayora power substation in Valencia. In other work, the firm is representing QBE Insurance in criminal proceedings relating to the derailment of a train on the railway line between Vigo and Porto.

Kennedys’ team is led by the experienced Jesús Vélez and Jose María Araúz, who is a specialist in handling contentious matters. The practice provides innovative tech solutions and has experience across the sector in insurance matters relating to construction, energy, health, maritime, aviation and travel.

Boutique firm Albors Galiano Portales is focused on shipping, yachting, transportation and insurance. Outside of its key area of marine insurance matters, the firm also handles property damages and civil liability issues. Maritime and commercial arbitrations expert Eduardo Albors leads the team with Javier Portales, who specialises in maritime and aviation law, as well as insurance work. Key clients include Allianz Global Corporate & Speciality, Repsol and Zurich Insurance.

CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo's multi-disciplinary insurance team has domestic and international experience. Practice head Carlos Peña, who is a corporate and M&A specialist, leads a team that was recently strengthened by the arrival of financial regulatory expert Ignacio Ramos, who joined as counsel from Clifford Chance in 2018. The department is advising AIG on underwriting risks under warranties and indemnities insurance policies, as well as assisting Drive & Win with the launch of a car insurance contract, where the valuation of the risk is based on mobile phone telematics.

Deloitte Legal has a dedicated insurance team that works across the sector, as well as a particular expertise in issues arising from innovative technologies. Insurance specialist Ignacio Ortiz del Río leads the practice, which includes Jose Luis Herrero Hidalgo, who is an expert in the regulation of insurance distribution. The firm advised BBVA on adapting to the new insurance distribution directive and assisted Compañía Española de Seguros de Crédito a la Exportación with analysing the consequences of a potential investment in Senegal. Other key clients include Hello Insurance Group Compañía de Seguros, Mapfre and Deutsche Bank.

MUÑOZ ARRIBAS ABOGADOS SLP specialises in the insurance sector, using its ‘knowledge of the industry’ to develop ‘a close relationship with clients’. The ‘accessible’ firm provides ‘very prompt advice at all times’. Practice co-head Jose Antonio Muñoz Villarreal is known for his ‘knowledge of the law, and ability to resolve concerns in a simple way’. He leads the team with construction liability expert Francisco Javier Muñoz, and Bernardo Ybarra Malo de Molina, whose experience includes medical liability, professional liability and D&O. The firm represented HDI in a claim related to the collapse of a building in the centre of Madrid resulting in two deaths, and also advised Axa France on the application of new data protection regulations.

Boutique firm PEREZ ALBORS | & CO specialises in contentious maritime and insurance matters. The practice is led by partners Carlos Perez, who is an expert in shipping law, and experienced litigator Maria Albors. In recent work, the team is defending insurer Generali against a claim brought following the collision between the vessels Detroit Jet and L’Atlantida, as well as acting for ITIC on the arrest of the vessel Remus in Algeciras.

The ‘highly prepared’ team at RCD stands out for its ‘energy and experience’, focusing on corporate insurance and regulatory issues, as well as sub-groups specialising in insurance taxation and cyberisk. The practice has ‘wonderful lawyers, versatile and with a very good knowledge of the industry’. It is led by the ‘excellentRuth Duque, who has ‘very strong knowledge of the sector’. The team also includes ‘hardworking’ associate Amara Oderiz, who is ‘very good at insurance law’.

Roca Junyent has a particular focus on corporate transactions involving insurance and reinsurance companies, as well as representing clients in dealings with the Spanish regulator. Santi Pagès leads the team and is experienced in regulatory and contractual matters. The firm advised Banco de Sabadell on the sale of the insurance company Mediterraneo Vida. Other key clients include RSA Insurance Group, Covea Group and Catalana Occidente.

The ‘very efficient’ and ‘high-quality’ practice at Blanco & Asociados Abogados specialises in insurance law. Dispute resolution expert and founding partner Fernando Blanco Giraldo, who heads the team, has ‘outstanding knowledge of the commercial risks segment and very good negotiation skills in difficult situations’. Santiago Martin is ‘one of the top casualty insurance lawyers in Spain’. Key clients include Zurich Insurance, HDI and ArcelorMittal.

KPMG Abogados specialises in the implementation of regulations, including GDPR and Solvency II. In addition, the firm has experience in multi-disciplinary litigation in the insurance and reinsurance sector. Financial services sector expert Francisco Uría Fernández and Beatriz Rua, who focuses on litigation and insolvency, lead the practice. The team assisted Santa Lucía, Compañía de Seguros y Reaseguros with the acquisition of a stake in five Aviva Group-owned companies in Spain. In other work, the department is representing Irish life insurance company Generali PanEurope in a civil claim concerning a unit-linked insurance plan. Augusto Piñel Rubio joined Gómez-Acebo & Pombo in December 2018.

Boutique firm LEGSE Abogados' main area of practice is insurance law, working for national and international insurance and reinsurance companies. Segundo Ruiz Rodriguez, who specialises in commercial and regulatory issues, leads the practice with counsel Miguel Ormaeche Trabudua. The team was also strengthened by the arrival of managing associate Eduardo Trillo, who joined from the Spanish Insurance Authorities. Key clients include Generali PanEurope and SegurCaixa Adeslas. Highlights included advising Intesa Sanpaolo Life on the launch of two new unit-linked life insurance policies.

Reliable, swift and knowledgeableRogers & Co. Abogados focuses on representing international insurers and reinsurers in litigation, with a particular speciality in marine and transport insurance. The ‘stand-out firm’ is led by ‘dynamic leader’ Marie Rogers, who provides ‘sound advice and vigorously pursues recoveries’, and David Diez Ramos, who is ‘an exceptional litigator, managing to find success where there is no right to do so’. The team is representing reinsurer MS Amlin in a dispute with Murimar concerning the O’Bahia fishing vessel that sank off the northern coast of Spain. Other key clients include XL Catlin, AIG Europe and Mapfre Global Risks.
