Baker McKenzie provides ‘global advice on all areas’ of the telecoms, media and information technology sectors, including corporate and regulatory, finance and litigation. The firm also has experience in privacy and data protection. Telecoms and information technology specialist Raúl Rubio is ‘pragmatic and available’. He leads the highly regarded practice with José María Méndez, who focuses on communications media and intellectual property.

The ‘excellent, efficient and adaptableECIJA has ‘great market sector knowledge and always goes the extra mile’. The firm specialises in telecoms, media and information technology, providing ‘high-quality service with international expertise’ and an ability to 'make complex regulatory requirements and topics easily digestible’. The team is led by founding partner Hugo Écija; arbitrator and intellectual property expert Alejandro Touriño; and Carlos Perez, who focuses on compliance and information technology. Also notable is the ‘knowledgeable and methodical’ Alonso Hurtado, who has expertise in ‘the area of legislation as well as a high level of empathy’. The ‘very international team’ at J&A Garrigues SLP has ‘in-depth knowledge of the market and all relevant legal issues’, in the telecoms and media sector. The firm also has experience in the areas of data protection and privacy, as well as start-ups and open innovation. Its strength in open innovation was further bolstered by the arrival of counsel Alejandro Sánchez del Campo from Telefonica in 2018. The practice of ‘top-notch experts’ is jointly led by ‘internationally-minded’ technology specialist José Ramón Morales; Carolina Pina Sanchez, who has ‘unparalleled experience in complex copyright and media litigation’; Javier Marzo, who focuses on telecoms and media; and counsel Alejandro Padín, who is particularly experienced in data protection matters. The department assisted Tencent Games with local regulatory issues relating to mobile gaming, and advised Across The Pond Media on the sale of the audiovisual rights for Across The Pond TV. Other clients include Google, Ericsson and Enel X. Manel Bueno left to become director of business and legal affairs at Netflix.

Uría Menéndez's multi-disciplinary digital business team is focused on key areas including cybersecurity, AI, big data and fintech. Cross-border specialist Pablo González-Espejo leads the practice and focuses on commercial and company law in the sector. His team includes expert litigator Borja Sainz de Aja, who is experienced in acting for engineering and technology multinationals, and counsel Leticia López-Lapuente, who advises on commercial and regulatory issues in the sector. The firm is representing Facebook in administrative sanctions proceedings initiated by the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, and is advising the Ferroglobe group worldwide on the implementation of the GDPR. Other key clients include Twitter, WhatsApp and Microsoft.

Boutique firm Abril Abogados, SL focuses on intellectual property disputes, media and enforcement law. The firm is also experienced in the areas of data protection and e-commerce. Intellectual property expert Ignacio Temiño Ceniceros leads the practice and primarily handles trade mark and copyright issues. In recent highlights, the team is advising Telefonica on adapting to the GDPR and is representing US audio-visual producer AMC in the criminal courts in proceedings against a group of websites offering the company’s copyrighted contents for free. Other clients include Discovery Channel and MásMóvil-Yoigo.

Clifford Chance's multi-disciplinary team works across the sector, with notable expertise in litigation, data protection and cybersecurity. The firm was strengthened by the arrival of public law and regulatory specialist Jaime Almenar, who joined from CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo in 2018 and is particularly experienced in telecoms. He jointly leads the practice with financial and M&A expert Jaime Velázquez and Miguel Odriozola, who focuses on antitrust matters in the telecoms and technology sectors. The department is advising Cellnex Telecom on regulatory issues arising from the company’s television signal carrying activities. In another highlight, the group is representing Vodafone-Ono in several judicial contentious administrative appeals relating to the award of telecoms contracts by public sector entities.

Specialist in telecoms, CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo focuses on data protection, regulation and e-commerce. Information and communication technologies expert Javier Torre de Silva leads the team, which includes experienced counsel Bartolomé Martín, who joined from DLA Piper LLP in 2018 and brings expertise in intellectual property and e-commerce. The firm is assisting Algérie Télécom Europe with the deployment of an underwater fibre cable linking Europe and Africa, and is advising Echostar Mobile on the launch of a new telecoms satellite network in Spain. Other key clients include Amazon, BT, Telefónica and Ferrovial Corporación. Blanca Escribano left for EY Abogados.

Cuatrecasas' practice is made up of specialists in a variety of disciplines, including intellectual property, finance law and litigation. The firm also has expertise in the increasingly relevant areas of data protection and gaming. Albert Agustinoy leads the team and is an expert in intellectual property and information technology. The department is representing Uber before the Court of Justice of the European Union in a matter relating to the free provision of information society services, and is advising Fuze on the regulatory framework for e-commerce services providers operating in Spain.

DLA Piper LLP works across the spectrum of telecoms and media work, with a particular expertise in data protection, ‘an area in which the firm has clearly focused and invested’. The ‘exceptional’ technology and privacy law specialist Diego Ramos leads the practice and is ‘responsive, rigorous and pragmatic’ in his approach. The team is advising Aon on issues arising from EU regulations related to data protection. In another highlight, the department is assisting D1 implement a plan to share investments information worldwide.

The ‘efficient and quick’ team at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo has ‘a really good understanding of the field and provides solid analysis based on clients’ needs’. The dedicated team is active in a range of issues in the sector, including the key areas of cyber security and data protection. Corporate, commercial and antitrust law expert Almudena Arpón de Mendívil leads the practice and has particular expertise in regulatory issues in the telecoms sector. Her team includes senior associate Ibán Diez, who specialises in intellectual property. The firm advised Circulo Fortuny on matters arising from the digital single market initiative, including the development of e-commerce platforms. In another highlight, the department is acting for Dixons Carphone on the sale of its Spanish business, which operates under the brand The Phone House.

Ramón y Cajal Abogados works across the sector, particularly in privacy and gaming matters. The firm is also increasingly active in information technology agreements and e-commerce. The practice is led by expert arbitrator Norman Heckh, who focuses on the information technology and communications industry, and Antonio de Mariano Sanchez Jauregui, who specialises in personal data protection, and IT agreements. The team is assisting the BMW Group with data protection issues, including the implementation of the GDPR in Spain. The department is also advising Suez on adapting to the GDPR.

A strong knowledge’ of the sector allows Bird & Bird ‘to get the best result for clients’. The firm has dedicated sub-groups focusing on technology and communications, as well as data protection, and provides expertise in dispute resolution across all areas. The ‘understanding and available’ team is led by Pablo Berenguer, Alexander Benalal, Lupe Sampedro and senior associate Juan Calderón. The practice is advising Quintiles IMS on its commercial, privacy and data protection issues. In another highlight, the department is assisting Verizon Telematics with matters relating to the integration of Movil Data Internacional, a Spain-based provider of commercial fleet management solutions.

Intellectual property and media law specialist Vicente Arias Máiz leads the practice at Eversheds Sutherland Nicea and focuses on the entertainment sector. His team has particular expertise in cross-border matters relating to intellectual property, as well as privacy issues. The group was strengthened by the arrival of senior associate Celia Bouzas from Peñafort Abogados, who is experienced in competition and new technologies. The department is acting for Emi Music Publishing Spain and Sony ATV Music Publishing in litigation relating to unauthorised advertising synchronisations in TV programmes and advertising spots. In another highlight, the firm is advising Mercedes-Benz on data protection matters.

EY Abogados is ‘unique in bringing not only knowledge of the law but also of the technical aspects of the deal, giving a full view of all the possible issues’. The firm has ‘deep understanding of TMT law and extensive experience dealing with telecoms and IT issues’. The international and multi-disciplinary practice is led by Blanca Escribano, who arrived in 2018 from CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo and is ‘easy to work with and knows what she is talking about’. Her team is known for its ‘outstanding skills, cooperation and strong connections’ and includes experienced counsel Sofía Fontanals, who also arrived from CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo in 2018 and specialises in the communications, audiovisual and technology industries. The department is advising ZTE on data protection and technology matters, and is assisting Axpo Iberia with adjusting to the GDPR.

Known for data protection and cyber security work, Hogan Lovells International LLP also has expertise in intellectual property. Practice head Gonzalo Gállego focuses on information technology law, copyright and trade marks. His team was strengthened by the arrivals of experienced associates Santiago de Ampuero from Uría Menéndez and Victor Mella from Clifford Chance in 2018. Key clients include Google and Santander.

Pérez-Llorca has particular expertise in public law and regulatory issues relating to the technology, media and telecoms sector. Public law specialist José Ramón de Hoces leads the practice with Juan Manuel Rodríguez Cárcamo, who is experienced in the regulatory aspects of the telecoms industry. Also noteworthy is Beatriz García, who was recently promoted to partner and advises clients internationally on audiovisual and broadcasting rights. The team advised Eurona Wireless Telecom on the €46.8m corporate financing granted by Magnetar Capital for the expansion of the company. In another highlight, the department is assisting Abertis with a number of data protection issues.

Solid and reliableRCD has ‘a deep knowledge and understanding of legislation, best legal practices and strict business ethics’. The ‘well-informed and prepared’ practice is focused on intellectual property, patent rights and copyright protection and its particular ‘experience with large and relevant transactions sets the firm apart’. Founding partner and information technology specialist Ignasi Costas leads the team of ‘highly-qualified individuals', who are recommended for their ‘abilities and temperament’.
