Clifford Chance is at the forefront of leveraged and bank financing for arrangers and lenders, the syndication of real estate loans, and international project financing involving Italian sponsors and Sace (the Italian export credit agency). The team advised the arrangers, Intesa Sanpaolo-Banca IMI, Mediobanca and UniCredit, on a financing related to the takeover bid for masts group EI Towers. Charles Adams co-heads the finance and capital markets practice alongside Filippo Emanuele, and Giuseppe De Palma is managing partner for Italy. Arosio led advice to UniCredit, Cr√©dit Agricole Cariparma, Interbanca and UBI Banca, as lenders, on a ‚ā¨45m financing for the acquisition of Giovanni Bozzetto, by a vehicle company indirectly controlled by Chequers Partenaires. Other highly regarded advisers are counsels Tessa Lee, who¬†heads the firm's projects practice in Italy,¬†and Alessandra Ortelli,¬†as well as managing associates Lilia Maria Lani, Alessandro Tanno¬†and Diego Esposito. Allen & Overy - Studio Legale Associato advises on general lending, acquisition, leveraged, real estate and export credit finance as well as project finance, high-yield matters, debt restructuring, structured finance and NPLs. Stefano Sennhauser is 'an outstanding lawyer' and Pietro Scarfone 'has a positive attitude to solving problems'. Scarfone advised Bank of America Merrill Lynch, as arranger and lender, on a financing granted to Partners Group for its acquisition and refinancing of six special purpose companies, which own shopping centres in Italy. Frederic Demeulenaere is a notable counsel, while counsel Juri Bettinelli joined from Chiomenti to lead the Italian restructuring and insolvency practice and former senior associate Gian Luca Coggiola joined Ashurst.

BonelliErede assists with syndicated, bilateral and large-scale corporate loans, property financing and the financing aspects of distressed debt transactions. Emanuela Da Rin led advice to a pool of banks on a financing for real estate fund, Porta Nuova Gioia, for the development of the construction of a 120-metre-high building. Project finance specialist Catia Tomasetti co-ordinates the banking and finance practice and the project finance team, Antonio La Porta was made partner, and recently promoted senior counsel Gabriele Malgeri and managing associate Giorgio Frasca specialise in project finance.

Chiomenti advises on major Italian deals involving structured finance, shipping finance and pure lending transactions. Energy business unit head Carola Antonini advised Banca Europea per gli Investimenti on the financing of a merchant line connecting France and Italy. Gregorio Consoli is the recently appointed banking and finance department head and Antonio Tavella heads the restructuring business unit. Other key advisers are Luca Bonetti, Giulia Battaglia, Francesco Ago and Giorgio Cappelli, and the counsels to note are recently promoted Alfredo Lizio and Andrea Martina, as well as Fraser Wood. Gianni, Origoni, Grippo, Cappelli & Partners' 'lawyers are particularly skilled in the banking and finance arena'. The project finance team is particularly active in the hospitals, infrastructure, oil and gas, energy and renewables sectors; the practice also stands out for the management of giant NPL portfolios. Giuseppe De Simone and Matteo Bragantini co-head the banking and finance practice and Ottaviano Sanseverino is project finance head. De Simone, who is 'always available for clients', led advice to Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, The Bank of Tokyio-Mitsubishi and Banca IMI on the Italian law aspects of the refinancing of facilities originally granted to Pirelli. Other key advisers are Matteo Gotti and Magda Serriello; Eduardo Fiordiliso rejoined as partner from UniCredit and Oriana Granato exited for Studio Legale Tributario in Association with Ernst & Young.

Latham & Watkins LLP¬†is widely praised for its experience in¬†acquisition finance, corporate lending, leveraged finance and debt restructuring. The practice acted for a¬†pool of banks on¬†a ‚ā¨4bn financing that was granted to Atlantia to finance the acquisition of Abertis Infraestructuras, one of the largest toll-road operators in the world, by Atlantia, ACS and Hochtief.¬†Marcello Bragliani¬†leads the Italian banking and finance department, and¬†Mauro Saccani¬†¬†and Antongiulio Scialpi¬†(the latter recently hired from Linklaters)¬†are key counsels.

Legance - Avvocati Associati's practice covers leveraged, acquisition, mezzanine, project and real estate financing. Other areas of strength are syndicated loans, debt restructurings and securities' lending transactions. The banking law group is co-ordinated by Andrea Giannelli and the energy, project and infrastructure department is co-ordinated by Monica Colombera and Filippo Ruffato. Giannelli acted for a pool of banks on a financing to Sintonia, which is wholly controlled by Edizione, the Benetton Family’s holding company. Other highly rated advisers are Luca Autuori, Guido Iannoni Sebastianini, Emanuele Espositi, Giandomenico Ciaramella and Giovanni Scirocco, who was promoted to the partnership in 2019. Ashurst¬†acts for banks, alternative lenders, financial institutions and trustees on a wide range of banking and finance transactions.¬†Carloandrea Meacci¬†assisted Banca IMI, UniCredit, BNP, Cr√©dit Agricole Corporate and Investment Banking, ING and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti with the ‚ā¨1bn debt refinancing of EF Solare Italia's 400MW solar portfolio in Italy.¬†Mario Lisanti¬†is practice head, and¬†Franco Vigliano¬†is highly rated. Umberto Antonelli¬†was made partner, Simone Egidi¬†is a key counsel and senior associate Gianluca Coggiola¬†was hired from Allen & Overy - Studio Legale Associato.

DLA Piper 'has strong capacity and always delivers on time'. The practice is well known for leveraged and corporate lending (including acquisition finance), syndicated lending, project financing and real estate finance. Antonio Lombardo heads the corporate and finance department in Italy; Lombardo and Ugo Calò advised Banca IMI and Banca Popolare di Milano on three facilities granted to E2E. Other highly rated practitioners are Francesco De Gennaro, Federico Zucconi Galli Fonseca, Agostino Papa, Giovanni Ragnoni Bosco Lucarelli, Francesco Ferrari and Francesco Novelli. Advising major banks and financial institutions,¬†Gattai Minoli Agostinelli & Partners' practice covers all kinds¬†of lending and financing deals, including both domestic and cross-border financings. Gaetano Carrello¬†advised a pool of banks on a ‚ā¨210m financing to Arexpo. Also highly rated are¬†Riccardo Agostinelli,¬†Lorenzo Vernetti,¬†Marco Leonardi¬†and structured finance specialist¬†Emanuela Campari Bernacchi. Andrea Taurozzi¬†and Valentina Lattanzi¬†were promoted to the partnership.

Norton Rose Fulbright advises on acquisition, energy and infrastructure, asset, export credit and trade finance as well as debt restructuring, corporate lending (including syndicated lending), real estate, shipping and telecoms finance. Arturo Sferruzza heads the Italian banking and energy teams, Gennaro Mazzuoccolo is an energy and infrastructure and shipping finance specialist, and Elisabetta Negrini and Luigi Costa  were promoted to of counsel.

Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe's key areas of lender and arranger work include the innovative structuring of banks, the recapitalisation of struggling banks, structured finance, financial services regulations and related fintech matters. Patrizio Messina is Italian finance group head, Gianrico Giannesi is deputy head of the Italian finance group, Raul Ricozzi is a project finance and  shipping finance expert, Annalisa Dentoni-Litta is highly specialised in public asset finance and Madeleine Horrocks regularly acts on complex Africa-related financing transactions. Marina Balzano was hired from Pavia e Ansaldo.

White & Case (Europe) LLP is experienced in leveraged, syndicated and real estate loans, as well as private debt transactions and structured finance. The team advised Goldman Sachs International, Goldman Sachs International Bank, Lucid Agency And Trustee Services and Lucid Trustee Services on loan facilities for the acquisition by private equity fund Corsair Capital of RGI. Giuseppe Barra Caracciolo, Iacopo Canino and Gianluca Fanti are highly rated, while Michael Immordino's practice is based in both London and Milan. Alessandro Nolet was recruited from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.

Dentons advises on acquisition and leveraged finance, structured finance, general corporate lending and refinancing, performance guarantees and security packages; the team is also experienced in real estate financing. Italy banking and finance head Alessandro Fosco Fagotto advised a pool of banks on the financing for NB Renaissance Partners’ acquisition of a majority stake in Italian shoe-making machinery manufacturer, Comelz. The counsels to note are Edoardo Galeotti and Franco Paolo Gialloreti; project finance specialist Giovanni Diotallevi and structured finance expert Gianpaolo Garofalo were recruited from Chiomenti and BonelliErede, respectively.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer¬†is particularly focused on leveraged finance, structured finance, debt restructuring and real estate and project finance.¬†Corrado Angelelli¬†advised¬†UniCredit, as lender,¬†on a ‚ā¨100m multi-borrower refinancing of a real estate portfolio-related debt, which comprised four shopping centres.¬†Emiliano Conio¬†is also highly rated and¬†Francesco Lombardo¬†is an experienced senior associate.

Hogan Lovells International LLP's Carlo Massini advises domestic and international lenders and sponsors on corporate finance, acquisition and asset finance, project and real estate finance transactions, as well as loan portfolio deals. Alberto Nurzia is an experienced senior associate.

Nctm Studio Legale frequently advises on cross-border deals that involve the UK and the US, and the practice includes both Islamic financing matters in Italy and project finance. Banking and finance head Eugenio Siragusa advised Banca Popolare di Milano on the corporate financing for the takeover of Alerion Clean Power. Stefano Padovani and Giovanni de’ Capitani di Vimercate  are also key partners.

Pedersoli Studio Legale advises on acquisition and corporate finance transactions as well as real estate finance. Maura Magioncalda, who 'deals with extremely complex situations', advised MPS Capital Services Banca per le Imprese, UniCredit and Crédit Agricole Cariparma on a financing for TSH PropCo to acquire Palazzo del Sonno in Florence; Alessandra De Cantellis and Consuelo Citterio are other key contacts. Simmons & Simmons' practice covers¬†Italian LBO financings,¬†new financings involving distressed transactions, and¬†assisting alternative lenders, including debt funds and insurance companies.¬†Nicholas Lasagna¬†advised a syndicate of 38 international and Italian banks on a revolving credit facility of up to ‚ā¨10bn, which was granted to Enel¬†and its subsidiary Enel Finance International.¬†Davide D‚ÄôAffronto¬†is also highly rated, while¬†Alessandro Elisio¬†and Riccardo Rossi¬†are key managing associates. Fabrizio Dotti¬†joined¬†K&L Gates.

Studio Legale Associato a Watson Farley & Williams is experienced in asset finance, export credit agency finance and corporate finance transactions, particularly in the shipping, aircraft, rail, and energy and infrastructure sectors. The team has also grown its real estate and acquisition finance practices; it advised the lenders on a real estate construction financing to a Fresia Group company for a shopping centre in Rome. Studio Professionale Associato a Baker & McKenzie's Alberto Fornari recently advised Credem on the sale of a portfolio of NPL mortgage loans. Ludovico Rusconi  is another key adviser and project finance counsel Giorgio Telarico joined from Studio Legale RCC.

Caiazzo Donnini Pappalardo & Associati ‚Äď CDP Studio Legale's¬†Giulio Tognazzi¬†is 'outstanding in terms of preparation, understanding of the work, experience and availability'. Tognazzi advised¬†BNL, and other banks, on a revolving credit facility for Ariston Thermo.

CBA Studio Legale e Tributario's practice covers shipping, real estate, project and structured finance transactions as well as LBOs; UniCredit and Mediocredito Italiano are clients. Francesco Dialti is 'a trusted adviser'.

CMS' banking and finance head Paolo Bonolis, who 'delivers down-to-earth advice at short notice', recently led advice to Aareal Bank on the restructuring of a mortgage loan granted to an Italian group. Domenico Gaudiello leads the public finance group.

Eversheds Sutherland Associazione Professionale's banking and finance head Marco Franzini recently advised UniCredit on a financing in favour of Novamont. Alessandro Engst left for Dentons' Rome office.

Giliberti Triscornia e Associati recruited Carmine Oncia from Grimaldi Studio Legale; Oncia advised UBI Banca on the financing to a real estate fund for the development of a hotel in Courmayeur. Another key adviser is Federico Fischer.
