BonelliErede’s dispute resolution group stands out for its ‘full mastery of legal topics’, as well as its ‘ability to communicate and negotiate with the clients’ counterpart’. The ‘excellent’ team recently defended Unipol Gruppo Finanziario against a €3.5bn liability claim brought by its subsidiary’s extraordinary receivership, which had arisen from a demerger operation. In other work, the team defended A.C.F. Fiorentina against a €200m damages claim brought by Bologna FC 1990 regarding an alleged sports fraud. Practice co-heads Vittorio Allavena and Alberto Saravalle are recommended along with the ‘highly qualified’ Monica Iacoviello, who produces ‘incredible solutions’, as well as Paolo Daino and of counsel Antonio Crivellaro, who are ‘exceptional international arbitrators’.

As ‘one of the top firms for dispute resolution’, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s ‘strong and responsive’ lawyers impress clients with ‘expert knowledge and practicable solutions’ across the entire spectrum of contentious matters, but with notable expertise in financial services litigation. Practice co-head Enrico Castellani, who is ‘an excellent litigator and strategist’, assisted Deutsche Bank with criminal proceedings brought by the public prosecutor of Milan relating to alleged fraud and market manipulation. In a complex cross-border matter, the team has been assisting Volkswagen with criminal and regulatory investigations, class actions and damages claims related to the global NOx and CO2 emissions scandal. Other key clients include Telecom Italia and Compass Group. Practice co-head Fabrizio Arossa is also recommended.

Gianni, Origoni, Grippo, Cappelli & Partners is particularly well regarded for its commercial dispute resolution practice, where it often acts for high-profile clients such as Credit Suisse, Bridgestone and Eni. In addition, the ten-partner team can also rely on the contentious expertise of its IP, employment, tax and antitrust departments, which can add another nine litigation partners. Highlights included defending EDF against a €300m damages claim brought by a shareholder of Edison and successfully assisting Hitachi with opposing an injunction sought by shareholders of Ansaldo STS to prevent the client voting at a shareholder meeting. The highly rated GianBattista Origoni and Antonio Auricchio jointly head the practice.

Rated by some as ‘best in class for contentious matters’, Lombardi Segni e Associati spans the entire range of civil, corporate and commercial litigation and provides ‘a service level that is excellent from every point of view’. The team has been defending Pirelli in antitrust litigation before the Court of Milan and represented Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena as plaintiff in two tortious liability lawsuits against Nomura International and Deutsche Bank; arbitration work includes recently acting for Siram in a case pertaining to a damages claim breach of contract brought by Gestione Integrata. Practice head Giuseppe Lombardi and Manuela Soligo are ‘skilled in framing the issue and determined to reach the goal’. Simone Brambilla joined the team from Chiomenti Studio Legale but Ugo Molinari and two other partners left to found new firm Molinari e Associati.

Allen & Overy – Studio Legale Associato is ‘excellent in all areas’ of contentious matters, but most prominent for its activity in financial services litigation for clients such as Société Générale and Bank of China. In other work, ‘mindful and responsive’ practice head Massimo Greco defended Shell Italia and Shell Italia Aviazione against a €900m damages claim related to a cartel investigation.

Dispute resolution boutique Arb lit – Radicati di Brozolo Sabatini Benedettelli’s ‘highly dedicated and insightful team’ mainly focuses on high-profile international arbitrations, where it provides ‘bespoke, partner-led and hands-on support’. Clients include Telecom Italia, National Bank of Kuwait and AmTrust. Luca Radicati di Brozolo has ‘an excellent legal and strategic sense’, Massimo Benedettelli is ‘very smart and knowledgeable’, and Michele Sabatini stands out for his ‘wisdom and commitment’.

In 2016, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP’s ‘very knowledgeable and strong’ dispute resolution team was predominantly active in international arbitration, but is equally adept at advising domestic and foreign clients such as Google, Eni and Edison on multi-jurisdictional litigation. Notably, the recommended Ferdinando Emanuele successfully represented SNAM as plaintiff against various Italian companies in a €400m dispute related to gas transportation and balancing services. Carlo Santoro is ‘very good’ and Francesca Gesualdi was recently promoted to counsel.

Clifford Chance provides ‘very good support’, ‘constant availability’ and ‘exhaustive responses’ to contentious issues. Fabio Guastadisegni heads the dispute resolution practice, which is particularly known for its clout in the financial services industry and recently defended Goldman Sachs in a €286m civil law suit against Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena. Notably, the group is also increasingly active in white-collar crime matters. Key clients include Credit Suisse, Siemens and Citibank. Recently promoted counsel Jean-Paule Castagno is recommended.

Hogan Lovells Studio Legale’s ‘experienced’ dispute resolution practice has ‘expertise in complex procedures’ spanning commercial, corporate, criminal and insurance cases, and demonstrates ‘deep knowledge in product liability litigation’, where it ‘quickly grasps the technical issues relevant to a case’. Clients include Lloyds Bank, British American Tobacco and Kuwait Petroleum Italia. Practice head Francesca Rolla operates at an ‘international top level’ and Christian Di Mauro is also ‘excellent’; Filippo Chiaves was promoted to the partnership.

Legance – Avvocati Associati gives ‘high-quality legal services’ across the spectrum of contentious matters, including corporate, commercial and financial services litigation and international arbitration. ‘Always available to give appropriate advice for business needs’, practice head Stefano Parlatore recently represented Alitalia as plaintiff in unfair competition litigation against Ryanair. Other clients of the team include BNP Paribas, Siemens and UnipolSai. Counsel Paolo Figliodoni is also recommended and Paolo Pototschnig joined Giovanardi e Associati Studio Legale in July 2017.

Nctm Studio Legale combines ‘excellent knowledge and communication’ with ‘high quality legal analyses’ in contentious matters. In one recent cutting-edge matter, the ‘outstanding’ Alberto Toffoletto represented UniCredit and FinecoBank in civil actions brought by Associazione Movimento Consumatori regarding the calculation of interest on loan agreements. Other clients include the EU Council and Deutsche Bank. Angelo Anglani is ‘a very sophisticated lawyer’. Sergio Fulco joined Gattai Minoli Agostinelli & Partners.

Pedersoli Studio Legale’s very broad dispute resolution practice ‘compares very well to the best European law firms’, not least because of its ‘excellent technical knowledge’ and ‘motivated team’. Andrea Magliani recently defended Intesa Sanpaolo against a €700m damages claim brought by a former shareholder of Rizzoli and Corriere della Sera. Eugenio Barcellona is ‘an outstanding lawyer’ and Carlo Pedersoli is also highly regarded.

Carnelutti Studio Legale Associato boosted its dispute resolution department with the arrival of four new partners and continues to represent multinational clients in commercial disputes and product and contractual liability cases. Salvatore Nolasco, who jointly heads the practice with Margherita Barié, recently defended Deutsche Bank against a damages claim brought by several corporate clients regarding derivative contracts.

Chiomenti Studio Legale’s ‘effective’ dispute resolution group provides ‘a high standard of legal and strategic support’ and is particularly active in contract liability disputes, financial services litigation and domestic arbitration. Clients include McDonald’s Italy, Valentino and Saipem. Practice head Silvio Martuccelli and Sebastiano Zimmitti are ‘good court advocates’.

DLA Piper’s ‘outstanding team’ handles a diverse mix of litigious and arbitral matters and, in 2016, notably increased its activity in white-collar criminal cases. Raffaella Quintana and the ‘creative’ Antonio Carino recently defended UPS in a corporate criminal liability case against an employee’s claim. Stefano Modenesi heads the team, in which Bruno Giuffré is also recommended.

Eversheds Sutherland Associazione Professionale is highly adept in assisting domestic and international banks and corporations with contentious commercial and IP matters, financial services litigation and arbitration. Beatrice Bigonzi and Mariafrancesca De Leo jointly head the practice, clients of which include Tyco and DuPont.

Mondini Rusconi Studio Legale shows ‘professionalism and willingness to listen and solve the problem’. Predominantly focused on IP, financial and corporate litigation across various industry sectors, the group also recently defended Eni in a multimillion-euro environmental litigation brought by SATAP. ‘Strong litigator’ Giacomo Bonelli and the ‘very professional’ Paolo Flavio Mondini are the key contacts.

Paul Hastings LLP has longstanding experience in advising high-profile domestic clients and international corporations such as Telecom Italia, Ikea Italy and GE Healthcare on complex cross-border litigation, including expertise in M&A, energy, bankruptcy and white-collar criminal cases. Francesca Petronio heads the three-partner group.

The contentious expertise of Studio Legale Associato in affiliation with Simmons & Simmons LLP spans insurance, insolvency, commercial and corporate, white-collar crime, product liability and financial services litigation. Recent work includes successfully representing aircraft lessor AerCap as plaintiff against Blue Panorama Airlines in a case relating to the repossession of leased aircrafts. Francesco Maruffi is the key contact.

Studio Professionale Associato a Baker & McKenzie’s comprehensive dispute resolution practice has ‘an excellent understanding’ of contentious insurance and commercial matters, as well as white-collar criminal law cases, covering litigation and arbitration at domestic and international level. Gianfranco Di Garbo heads the practice, which recently hired the ‘outstanding’ Leonardo Giani from Norton Rose Fulbright.

Contentious IP advice is the central pillar of Bird & Bird’s dispute resolution practice, but the group is also increasingly active in employment, tax and regulatory litigation and arbitration. Giovanni Galimberti recently acted for Dailymotion in a content liability dispute. Osvaldo Lombardi and Edoardo Courir head the team.

De Berti Jacchia Franchini Forlani provides ‘an outstanding service level’ in contentious matters and regularly represents multinational clients such as Derichebourg in commercial and administrative litigation and arbitration. ‘Experienced and skilled litigator’ Maria Cristina Franchini heads the practice.
