The practice provides day-to-day tax advice and assists with corporate reorganisations as well as domestic and cross-border transactions. Additionally, the tax litigation and transfer pricing teams advise software and digital industry clients on permanent establishment and transfer pricing issues, and on international tax rulings. Massimo Giaconia and Mario D’Avossa assisted Enel Distribuzione with a patent box structure. Carlo Gnetti ‘supports clients during challenging situations’. Carlo Galli ‘knows how things work’ and recently advised Banca IFIS on the tax aspects of its acquisition of GE Capital Interbanca Group. DLA Piper hired ‘impressive lawyer’ Andrea Di Dio from Chiomenti Studio Legale as its new tax head in Rome, while Fabrizio Capponi and former senior adviser Giulio Andreani joined Dentons. The practice is recommended for tax audits and litigation, cross-border reorganisation, tax restructuring, M&A-related tax issues, and transfer pricing. It also assists with Italian patent box implementation and has particular experience with start-ups as well as in advising HNW individuals on tax planning. Antonio Tomassini ‘has deep tax law knowledge’, of counsel Antonio Martino is ‘a rising star’ and Christian Montinari is also highly regarded.

Dentons recruited Fabrizio Capponi and Giulio Andreani, who ‘stands out for his ability to simplify difficult cases’, from DLA Piper. The team’s tax expertise spans transactions for private equity and financial services clients, wealth management tax issues, tax litigation and restructuring. Italy tax head Andrea Fiorelli ‘has remarkable skills’.

Studio Tributario Associato Facchini Rossi & Soci (FRS)’s practice covers corporate tax, taxation of financial products and private equity funds, international taxation, tax litigation, management incentive plans and taxation of individuals. Francesco Facchini advised Quaestio Capital Management on the tax aspects of an NPL securitisation. Luca Rossi is another key adviser.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has ‘a quick, strong team’, whose recent tax activity focused on refinancings, joint ventures, takeovers and listings as well as contentious tax matters. Renato Paternollo, who ‘has strong technical knowledge and is also practical and responsive’, acted as tax counsel for Pirelli & C. during its IPO. Recently promoted partner Roberto Egori assisted JSC Severstal-Metiz with the tax aspects of the sale of Redaelli Tecna.

Gianni, Origoni, Grippo, Cappelli & Partners ‘always exceeds expectations’. The practice assists with purchase and acquisition structures, and implementation agreements and deeds as well as tax litigation and audits. Fabio Chiarenza, who is ‘reliable and knowledgeable’, advised Open Fiber and its shareholders on the availability of high-value tax allowances and Stefano Grilli assisted Rossoneri Sport Investment Lux with tax matters regarding the acquisition of a majority stake in football club A.C. Hogan Lovells Studio Legale advises on tax issues arising from M&A, restructurings and capital markets transactions and regularly acts as tax counsel for public and private REITs, insurance and reinsurance companies. Other areas of note include VAT and sales taxes, tax ruling requests, audits, appeals, and tax settlement procedures. Fulvia Astolfi ‘has an incredible mix of skills’ and Serena Pietrosanti is a highly regarded counsel.

McDermott Will & Emery Studio Legale Associato’s ‘excellent team’ assists with transfer pricing and withholding tax issues, patent boxes and business-critical tax litigation. Carlo Maria Paolella heads the practice, Andrea Tempestini ‘has in-depth knowledge’ and Mario Martinelli is the tax litigation team head. Emidio Cacciapuoti, who focuses on the tax aspects of funds, alternative investment fund structures, and carried-interest schemes, joined from King & Wood Mallesons.

NCTM Studio Legale has a ‘strong reputation’ for tax structuring, tax litigation matters, transfer pricing, and tax advice on M&A and private equity transactions. Paolo Agnesi acted for CAI - Compagnia Aerea Italiana in tax litigation. Federico Trutalli is ‘technically strong and sees the big picture’. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP ‘has extensive knowledge of the files it works on’ and advises on the tax optimisation of M&A transactions, hybrid financing and investment structures, debt and pre-IPO tax restructurings as well as employee benefit plans. It also assists with tax litigation and advises HNW individuals on personal and estate tax matters. Vania Petrella ‘has great knowledge of tax in Italy’ and Paola Albano is ‘always available’.

De Berti Jacchia Franchini Forlani’s ‘very knowledgeable team’ assists clients in the gaming, food, automotive, bank, luxury and fashion, entertainment and media, and IT sectors. Massimiliano Gazzo and Tiziana Zona advised Stanleybet Group on the attribution of profits to an alleged permanent establishment.

Fantozzi e Associati advises on corporate and international taxation as well as tax issues surrounding M&A deals, financial markets, and real estate matters. Additional areas of strength include indirect taxation, transfer pricing and tax disputes. Augusto Fantozzi is widely praised.

Gattai Minoli Agostinelli & Partners’ department head is the ‘very smart and quick’ Cristiano Garbarini, who joined from Tremonti Romagnoli Piccardi E Associati. ‘Providing fast, complete answers’, K&L Gates’s tax expertise includes domestic and cross-border acquisitions; real estate deals; financial markets; employee remuneration; tax litigation; and ruling applications. Vittorio Salvadori di Wiesenhoff, who ‘understands the ins-and-outs of tax’, advised AAREAL BANK’s Italian branch on the tax aspects of a financing for the acquisition of shopping centres.

Linklaters’ Italian tax head Luca Dal Cerro ‘understands international clients’ needs’. The team advised Intesa Sanpaolo on tax issues regarding a securitisation transaction. Recently promoted managing associate Riccardo Petrelli ‘gives hands-on tax advice’.

Pedersoli Studio Legale’s recent caseload includes tax litigation, voluntary disclosures, and advising on the tax aspects of restructuring and debt restructuring. The team also assists with inheritance-related tax matters. Andrea de’ Mozzi advised Oceanic Gold Global on tax issues surrounding the sale of its 49% stake in Giochi Preziosi.
