Editor’s Welcome

Welcome to The Legal 500 Future Lawyers guide 2022/23; our inaugural guide under our new name!

This year we surveyed over 2,000 trainees and pupils at firms and chambers across the UK to find out all about their training contracts and pupillages. From client contact to work/life balance and job satisfaction to international secondments, we bring you trainees and pupils’ honest thoughts on every aspect of their training.

After two rocky years for the legal graduate recruitment industry, we finally saw a shift back to normality in 2022, with many firms and chambers increasing their trainee and pupil intakes for the first time since 2019.

As ever, we’re here to help you navigate the training contract and pupillage application process, from the initial research and choosing a firm or chambers, to making sure you put your best foot forward at an assessment day or interview.

We are now an online-only guide and as such our website is packed with resources to help you. And if you’re on the go, why not scroll through law firm profiles on The Legal 500 Future Lawyers app or listen to our podcast.

We know that each candidate has different priorities when it comes to choosing a law firm or chambers; that’s why we’ve arranged The Legal 500 Future Lawyers survey scores into accessible winners’ tables. Whether your main criterion is supervisor approachability or salary, we can point you in the direction of a suitable firm for you. There are also interactive comparison tables which let you do just that – compare firms according to what’s important to you.
