Career

In 2007, Mauricio separated from the firm Facio & Cañas, where he worked for 15 years until becoming partner, and then joined BLP, where he is responsible for the Litigation, International Trade, and Environmental law practices.

Mauricio is currently a member of the editorial boards of the Derecho Empresarial REDEM journal and of the magazine of the Costa Rican International Law Association. He is a member of the Board of Visitors of the Tropical Studies Organization.

Education

Mauricio obtained his Law degree in 1994 and has a Master’s degree from Georgetown University, 1999. In addition, he completed post-graduate studies on environment and natural resources management at the UNED. Mauricio served as research assistant of Georgetown University in the International Trade area. In 2011, he was a recipient of the Rodolfo Piza award granted by the Costa Rican International Law Association for his contribution to the academic teaching of this field. Mauricio has been a participant, coach and judge of college students in Jessup and ELSA Moot Court competitions, as well as in the Eduardo Jiménez de Aréchaga Moot Court Competition, which he founded.

In recent headline work, Eduardo Calderón assisted Uber with disputes fuelled by regulatory and political controversies surrounding its entry into the Costa Rican market, including regulatory proceedings, civil actions at the Supreme Court and the development of a litigation strategy after the country’s government declared the client’s operations illegal. Recent highlights in the international arbitration sphere include the successful settlement of a dispute between the firm’s client, Gaya, and its former Central American distributor Asics. Other clients include Amazon, UPS and Siemens.
