The ‘prompt and responsiveAtsumi & Sakai fields experienced domestic and international lawyers, and includes an innovation practice group which focuses on the key emergent areas of fintech, Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI). Yuri Suzuki, who heads the fintech team, is assisting Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group with the business plans, prototypes, alliances and roll out process for the company’s Digital Accelerator Program, while the IoT and AI team is jointly led by Masataka Hayakawa, Hiroyuki Sanbe and Takafumi Ochiai. The ‘approachable, supportive and knowledgeableChie Kasahara leads the TMT department, which also handles the registration, protection, use and licensing of patents, model utility rights, design rights, copyrights and trade marks.

TMI Associates provides ‘quick and knowledgeable’ advice on new IT issues including software transaction contracts, website creation, domain name protection, matters relating to the production and distribution of online video, music and gaming content and related IP rights, and internet service providers' legal liability issues. Utilising its international network, the practice also provides research services relating to information protection and regulations in various countries worldwide. Tomoo Shibano and Masaya Hirano jointly lead the team, which also includes experienced associates Takashi Hatae and Takuya Yamago; Hirano recently assisted Cofense with the establishment of its cybersecurity services in Japan.

Anderson Mori & Tomotsune advises major clients including Dunlop Sports and Taiyo Holdings on matters across the full spectrum of the TMT sector. The group has particular expertise in drafting and negotiating contracts including services agreements, particularly those with a key focus on the Japanese legal market and its culture. Yasufumi Shiroyama jointly leads the practice with, Tsutomu Miyano, Atsushi Yamada, Yoshikazu Iwase and Akihito Nakamachi; Nakamachi recently acted for MedRx on a licence agreement with Cipla USA.

The ‘responsive and client-friendly’ team at Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu counts traditional media businesses on its client roster including companies involved in system and software development, gaming and telecoms, as well as those involved in emerging and innovative technologies including AI, IoT, fintech, and cybersecurity. The team specialises in the development and management of content and content-related rights including copyrights and publicity rights. Heading the practice are Ryoichi Mimura and IT and M&A expert Soichiro Fujiwara; the latter recently assisted Toyota and JapanTaxi with an agreement for the joint development of app services for taxi operators.

The experienced team at Ushijima & Partners handles issues across TMT and specialises in litigation relating to the development of large IT systems for financial institutions and issues pertaining to big data analysis and internet defamation. The group's domestic and foreign clients include financial institutions, IT companies, retail operators, pharmaceutical manufacturers and sporting event organisations. Practice head Hiroyasu Kageshima, advises on IT system developments, personal data, internet service issues, fintech, data leakage, and defamation work.

Herbert Smith Freehills' full-service offering and cross-border capability ensures it can handle a wide range of significant and innovative matters including transactions, joint ventures, licensing work, compliance issues and disputes. The two-partner practice is led by 'responsive' TMT specialist Graeme Preston, who is 'very experienced in cross-border M&A’; he has particular expertise advising clients on transactions, commercial issues and licensing matters. Also noteworthy is senior associate Emma Stones, who ‘does an exceptional job of handling tasks efficiently and effectively.' The team recently worked with SoftBank Group on its investment into a series of solar projects in India.

With seven US-qualified technology and licensing lawyers, Morrison & Foerster LLP has a dedicated team specialising in technology transactions including the transfer, commercialisation, development and exploitation of IP. Stuart Beraha heads the technology transactions group and has experience in technology, content, branding and IP; he is advising Toshiba on the $18bn sale of its subsidiary Toshiba Memory Corporation to a consortium led by Bain Capital. In another recent highlight, the department also assisted Toshiba with the sale of Toshiba Visual Solutions to Hisense Electric, a leading China-based electronics and home appliances manufacturer.

Baker McKenzie (Gaikokuho Joint Enterprise) advises clients across the spectrum of the communications industry, from wireline operators and equipment manufacturers to satellite network and media content providers. The group has significant strength in the fintech sector, thanks to a multi-disciplinary team, which advises on transactional and regulatory issues. Practice head Kensaku Takase focuses on IT and IP law and regularly handles IT deals related to outsourcing, licensing, and cloud-based solutions; he also has experience in General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance programmes. Associate Tsugihiro Okada is also recommended; he focuses on data protection, telecoms law and antitrust matters. The team recently advised the Tokyo Stock Exchange listed Lifull on its A$187m scheme of arrangement acquisition of Mitula Group; the transaction created a leading global online classifieds and marketplaces group.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is involved in many of the biggest tech deals in Japan thanks to a combination of expertise from across the US, Europe and Asia. The group focuses on complex, cross-border matters; it recently advised Hewlett-Packard on the Japanese aspects of its global division into two separate listed companies. Edward Cole, Takeshi Nakao
 and Kaori Yamada co-head an experienced team that recently assisted high-profile technology client, Lenovo, with its $234m acquisition of a majority stake in the PC business of Fujitsu.
