Thomson Geer has bolstered its national mergers and acquisitions team with two new Partners joining the firm.

Matt Couper and Jonathon Wood have extensive M&A experience in Australia and London, advising private and public companies across a wide range of industry sectors.

Thomson Geer Chief Executive Partner Adrian Tembel welcomed Matt and Jonathon to the firm, saying: “Matt and Jonathon will add depth to our private markets and private equity offering and consolidate the strong collaboration between our Sydney and Brisbane teams.

Thomson Geer was ranked second in deal count for 1H23 in Australia by Mergermarket. The firm was also named Australian Mid-Market Legal Advisor of the Year by Mergermarket in 2021 and was a finalist for the same award in 2022.

Matt joins Thomson Geer’s Brisbane office while Jonathon is based in Sydney.

Matt has almost 20 years’ experience advising financial sponsor and corporate clients on M&A, investments, shareholder arrangements, joint ventures, structuring and general corporate and portfolio company matters. As well as working for Australian top tier and UK magic circle firms, he has also worked as in-house counsel for the private equity and merchant banking arm of an international investment bank. Matt was a finalist in the 2022 Lawyers Weekly Partner of the Year Awards in the Mergers and Acquisitions and Corporate categories.

Jonathon has also worked for leading firms overseas and has significant experience working with clients around the world across a range of sectors including banking and financial services, insurance, retail, technology and telecommunications.
