Leading London-based independent law firm Gherson Solicitors LLP (Gherson) is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Cattee, Elizabeth (Lisa) Uttley, and Amalia Gherson to the partnership. The trio join Founding Partner Roger Gherson and International Protection Partner Charles Burnett at the helm of the firm bringing the total number of partners to five.

Previously a Principal Investigative Lawyer and Prosecutor at the Serious Fraud Office, Thomas Cattee joined Gherson in 2021. Head of the White-Collar Crime, Extradition, INTERPOL and Sanctions department, Thomas’ practice includes representing clients in high-profile cross-border cases which involve extradition, mutual legal assistance, INTERPOL, complex financial crime, bribery and corruption, and money laundering.

UK Inbound Immigration Partner Lisa Uttley services individuals and ultra-high-net worth families across the full spectrum of UK immigration and nationality applications. Her practice focusses primarily on matters involving complex and discretionary elements, such as excessive absences, missed deadlines and exceptional in-country switches; and has a track-record of successfully challenging the Home Office via Judicial Review.

International Protection and Sanctions Partner Amalia Gherson leads many of the firm’s high-profile and complex cases involving asylum and protection claims, appeals to the Immigration Tribunals, designation challenges (in respect of both immigration sanctions and financial sanctions), UK sanctions compliance advice, and sanctions enforcement. Working closely with teams of professional advisors both in the UK and abroad, Amalia has a real skill for coordinating multi-faceted and multi-jurisdictional matters.

The trio are only the second cohort of solicitors to have been appointed to the partnership since the firm restructured to become an LLP in 2022. Prior to the restructuring, the firm was headed by Founding Partner Roger Gherson, who launched the firm as an immigration practice in 1988. The firm, now boasting 17 qualified lawyers, has since built an enviable reputation in not only immigration, but also human rights, extradition, white collar crime, cross border disputes and sanctions.

Founding Partner Roger Gherson, commented on the appointments:

“At a time of instability on the global political landscape, it is more important than ever for us to provide our clients with much needed reassurance and first-class legal advice. These appointments reflect our commitment to investing in, and promoting, exceptional talent here at Gherson LLP; as well as our dedication to strengthening each of our practice areas to continue servicing our clients with the excellence that they have come to expect from us.

Thomas, Elizabeth and Amalia have established themselves as some of the brightest young talent in the legal sector and we are delighted to have them join the partnership”.

The appointments are effective from 2 April 2024.
