Azmi & Associates is pleased to announce the appointment of Mahadi Abdullah as the Firm’s Oil & Gas Industry Advisor with effect from 9 November 2020. His appointment is in line with the Firm’s strategic decision to build up our Oil & Gas Practice Group.


Mahadi brings on board his varied and wide-ranging experience in the areas of Shareholder/Joint Venture Agreements, International Commercial Transactions, International Trade Law, Corporate & Commercial Law, Gas Sales Agreements, Crude Oil Processing Agreements, Crude Oil/Products Sale & Purchase Agreements, Petroleum Sharing Agreements, Construction Law, Land Law, Employment Law, Oil & Gas Dispute Resolution, Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) and E&P/Resource Law.

During the tenure of his career, he was involved in the following major projects:

  • Sudan Refinery JV Project.
  • PETRON Philippines M&A.
  • Sudan United Nations Oil Products Supply Contract.
  • 1st PETRONAS Grand Prix/Formula 1 Sponsorship Agreement.
  • 1st PETRONAS Floating LNG Project.
  • Canada Progress Energy Shale Gas M&A.
  • Pacific NorthWest LNG Canada JV Project.
  • Uzbekistan Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) JV Project.
  • India RGT/Power Plant M&A.
  • Vietnam PMPC Petrochemical/PVC JV Project.
  • Dragon LNG JV Regasification Terminal Project (Milford Haven, Wales).
  • PETRONAS HRM Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS).

Prior to joining Azmi & Associates, Mahadi had 33 years of service with PETRONAS, the national petroleum company in Malaysia, since 1981, holding positions in the international marketing, corporate planning, oil downstream planning and legal services divisions.

At the legal services division of PETRONAS, he served as Senior Legal Counsel in various business areas such as human resource management, corporate services, oil downstream business, E&P upstream business and gas business. He also served as Director at Dragon LNG Limited, United Kingdom and also Legal Advisor/Company Secretary at PETRONAS Gas Berhad, a public listed company.

Prior to working with PETRONAS, he worked in the merchant/investment banking sector at D&C Nomura Merchant Bankers Berhad as Corporate Lending Officer/Corporate Finance Officer for 2 years. Before that, he worked as Credit Officer at United Asian Bank Berhad (now known as CIMB Bank) from 1977 to 1979.

Mahadi graduated from the University of London with a LL.B (Hons) degree in 1994 and completed his Certificate in Legal Practice in 2010. Prior to that, he graduated from Brandeis University, USA with a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) degree in 1976 and he completed his Diploma in Banking from the Institute of Bankers, London in 1981.

Azmi & Associates believe that his vast experience will be a valuable asset to our growing oil & gas practice and will allow the Firm to offer clients expanded services. Mahadi will also be concurrently doing his pupillage with the Firm.
