Cyprus expects to join the Schengen Area in full during 2027, Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection Nicholas Ioannides told CyBC on 10 October 2026. That is a government target, not an accession date fixed by the Council of the European Union. The distinction matters for employers, residents and travellers planning around the future removal of internal border checks.

Where the process stands

The European Commission confirmed on 15 July 2026 that it had adopted a report positively assessing Cyprus's technical preparedness. The Council's published page for its Working Party for Schengen Matters meeting on 13 November lists a proposal dated 27 October 2026 to close Cyprus's action plans addressing deficiencies identified in the Schengen evaluations. The listing records a procedural step; it does not establish adoption of that proposal or authorise the lifting of internal border checks.
