Baker McKenzie provides a full range of tax advice to international clients. The team, headed by managing partner Fred Burke, also includes Nguyen Thanh Vinh, who advised Mead Johnson Nutrition on optimising its tax benefits across several of the client’s product sectors and represented American Indochina Management in a VAT credit dispute. Asian Coast Development is another key client.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer advised Metro Group on all tax aspects of the sale of its wholesale business and a €655m real estate portfolio to TCC Holding. Other mandates included personal tax advice, tax restructuring and tax liability cases, an area in which the team has particular expertise. Managing partner Tony Foster heads the team, in which Milton Lawson and Don Stokes are also recommended.

DFDL routinely handles tax restructuring and contentious tax matters for local and international clients. Practice head Jack Sheehan recently advised Gameloft on aligning its transfer pricing documentation with Vietnamese and Indonesian authorities’ specifications. It is adept at handling tax litigation for local and international clients; the team represented a joint stock company against a wrongful decision regarding tax payments; the appeal was upheld by Ho Chi Minh City’s tax authorities. With several offices across Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, PricewaterhouseCoopers Legal Vietnam Company Limited is a strong option for all contentious and non-contentious tax matters, having particular expertise in tax controversy cases.     On 6/20/2012, the National Assembly voted to adopt the Law on Price (the "LOP") in response to the public demand for an effective legal framework to control price manipulation from dominant enterprises such as gasoline, electricity, etc. The law will take effect from 01/01/2013 and repeal Ordinance No. 40/2002/PL-UBTVQH10 dated 26/4/2002 of the National Assembly Standing Committee (the "Ordinance"), which is conceived as outdated and containing certain provisions contravening the WTO’s regulation. This article describes the main features of the law and provides some insight into its potential impacts on the Vietnamese economy.
