Cobalt attracts an impressive roster of international and local clients, especially in the pharmaceuticals, life sciences and media sectors, and ‘provides exceptional guidance in the fields of IP rights and data security’. Team head Ingrida Karina-Berzina impresses with ‘the way she proactively handles each case’; she is acting for Pfizer on patent protection matters along with Guntars Zile. The practice, which includes senior associates Linda Bīriņa and Liga Fjodorova, also handles trade mark and copyright protection.

Clients are ‘impressed’ with Ellex and with IP specialist Mārtiņš Gailis, pointing to his responsiveness. It offers the full range of IP, technology and regulatory expertise to household-name clients, and handles trade mark disputes for Sky International AG. Senior associate Sarmis Spilbergs heads up the media and technology division and Līga Merwin is advising Novartis on various patent issues.

Sorainen provides ‘exceptionally high-quality service’ in its delivery of the full range of IP and technology expertise. Agris Repšs leads the team; Andris Tauriņš heads the media and technology group. Tauriņš is acting for Olympic Casino Latvia in a trade mark protection case. Eversheds Sutherland Bitāns has wide-ranging experience in IP disputes, e-commerce issues, data protection and licensing. Inese Kalnāja-Zelča and senior associate Elīna Muciņa are advising Samsung Electronics Baltics on a range of IP and data protection matters; managing partner Agris Bitāns takes on a variety of contentious cases.

Kronbergs Čukste Derling’s practice is headed by Valters Kronbergs. Vineta Čukste-Jurjeva handles a variety of contentious and non-contentious trade mark and patent cases and is acting for longstanding client Microsoft on matters including software licensing. Newly made up partner Zane Veidemane Bērziņa is known for her focus on IT-related work including software licensing and outsourcing.

TGS Baltic is acting for the Public Utilities Commission in a dispute with a mobile operator on roaming tariffs under an EU regulation and also counts WhatsApp and Facebook among its clients. On the trade marks front, the team is assisting Aldaris (a Carlsberg group company), Wrigley and General Electric. Andra Rubene and senior associate Inese Rendeniece are noted practitioners.

Vilgerts’ clients come largely from the IT, media, pharmaceuticals and food and drink sectors, and are served on all aspects of IP protection. It is acting for Red Bull in a trade mark invalidation action, and Ineta Krodere is representing Microsoft before the European Court of Justice in a preliminary ruling on the rules applicable to exhaustion in relation to computer programs. Brigita Tērauda, who joined the team in early 2017, is noted for her trade mark and copyright work.

Led by Ieva Judinska-Bandeniece, Fort’s core practice covers all aspects of IP protection with a focus on brand and design protection. It assisted clients such as MUD Products and Mintos Marketplace on a range of trade mark protection matters.

Leadell Fogels, Vitols & Paipa’s managing partner Kārlis Vītols leads a team with noted expertise in the fintech arena. It assists clients including The Payment House, Grant Thornton Baltic and Baltikums Bank with areas such as licensing and trade mark protection. Nils Fogels and senior associate Ilze Jankeviča are key members of the team.

Njord Law Firm acts for multinational corporates on anti-counterfeiting, seizure and other brand protection actions. Clients include Schweppes, Porsche and Converse. Lead partner Sergei Petrov’s work includes acting for Disney on customs seizures and destruction of infringing goods.

Agency Tria Robit is a substantial group of patent and trade mark attorneys headed by Vladimir Anohin. Natalija Anohina and Inese Polaka acted for Procter & Gamble and Volkswagen in trade mark opposition cases.
