Cobalt has ‘remarkable industry knowledge’ in IP and financial services disputes, where practice co-head Girts Lejins, senior associate Martins Aljens and Ingrida Karina-Berzina are the main contacts. It is also ‘one of the best’ in public law, with fellow co-head and managing partner Lauris Liepa being recommended along with ‘respected’ senior associate Matīss Šķiņķis. Senior associate Linda Bīriņa has been defending Latvijas Televīzija in a copyright dispute with MTG TV Latvia relating to the format of a morning show. Other clients include AstraZeneca and SEB.

Ellex fields ‘experts’ in domestic and international law. Department head Daiga Zivtiņa, together with ‘excellent’ senior counsel Jevgēnijs Salims, represented GE Capital Latvia in litigation and arbitration regarding contractual issues arising from the sale of a credit and real estate portfolio. Other clients include KPMG and the Latvian Ministry of Finance. Ilga Gudrenika-Krebs and senior attorney Irina Kostina are highly experienced. Senior attorneys Roberts Rimsa, who joined as a result of the merger with Glimstedt & Partners, is another key name.

Eversheds Sutherland Bitans adopts ‘a quality and creative approach to complicated matters’. The firm is acting for Samsung Electronics Baltics in three cases against the State Revenue Service (SRS) concerning VAT, corporate income tax and other issues. Managing partner Agris Bitāns, who heads the practice, successfully represented Tokiomarine Kiln in a cross-border subrogation claim against Rono Trans. Litigator Ilze Kramiņa is well respected.

TGS Baltic’s ‘experienced and skilled attorneys’ include practice head and managing partner Ivars Grunte, Agnese Hartpenga and Linda Štrause, who has ‘a broad litigation practice’. Senior associates Andis Pauniņš and Nauris Grigals have ‘excellent analytical skills’. Štrause defended the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) against Latvijas Gāze’s opposition to its gas infrastructure regulations. Reverta and Mobil Asfalts are also clients.

Kronbergs Cukste Derling achieves ‘remarkable successes’ in tax, competition and regulatory cases, among others. Vineta Čukste-Jurjeva and senior associate Madara Smalkā have been representing 4finance in an appeal against a Consumer Rights Protection Centre decision regarding alleged breaches of advertising rules. Valters Kronbergs is another name to note in a practice which also acts for Electrolux, Avon and DHL.

Primus, Attorneys at Law has an ‘excellent’ team, which is acting for food retailers in litigation pertaining to alleged defamation and false information published by an internet portal. Other clients include KPMG Baltics and Alpha Shipping. Sintija Radionova, newly promoted partner Mārtiņš Mežinskis and senior associates Konstantīns Teļakovs and Andis Ozoliņš are recommended.

Sorainen handles the full range of disputes, notably including debt collection and insurance cases. Practice head Agris Repšs has been representing Contigo Print Group in a debt collection claim against an insolvent debtor. Specialist counsel Viktorija Jarkina has ‘strong knowledge of civil procedure law’. New clients include RB Rail and Krässik.

Vilgerts’ recent activity includes contractual, debt collection, bankruptcy and public procurement disputes. Gints Vilgerts, as well as senior associates Aivars Lošmanis and Jānis Kubilis, represented Iveco group companies in bringing debt collection actions against its insolvent dealer. Kubilis heads the practice, in which former co-head Debora Pāvila remains active. IMEON and Aon Baltic are new clients.

BDO Law excels in tax and energy disputes, where the team recently represented Global Oil Services in winning a shareholder dispute with Latvijas Naftas Tranzits; Jānis Zelmenis and senior associate Rihards Niedra led the matter. Niedra now heads the practice, which includes well-regarded managing partner Vita Liberte. Justīne Haka left the firm.

bnt attorneys-at-law’s recent caseload includes energy, insolvency and competition disputes. Arturs Krauklis, who is qualified in Latvia and Sweden, heads the practice and excels in cross-border cases.

Fort represented the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia and a government ministry against Jelgavas autobusu parks’ and Nordeka’s challenge to new regulations governing compensation given to transport companies. Outside of public law, the firm is renowned for energy and IP disputes. Practice head Sandis Bērtaitis is ‘an excellent lawyer’.

Leadell Fogels, Vitols & Paipaensures a sense of security’ for its clients, which include DNB banka and Riga Development Solutions. The firm has been active in debt recovery, construction and real estate matters recently. Managing partner Kārlis Vītols heads the team, in which Nils Fogels and senior associate Ilze Jankeviča are also key figures.

Njord Law Firm is representing AbeBooks in bringing action against a website that allegedly used the client’s database and copyrighted content. Practice head Sergei Petrov and Dmitri Kolesnikov are recommended.

Rödl & Partner’s associate partner Kristīne Zvejniece successfully represented Döhler Scandinavia in terminating an employment relationship. Inese Lazdupe and attorney Dace Drice are also names to note.

Skrastins & Dzenis covers all manner of disputes, including real estate and insolvency litigation. Senior partner Verners Skrastins heads the practice, which includes Vigo Krastiņš and Andrejs Gulajevs.
