Career

Joseph Anthony Turzi focuses his practice on providing strategic counseling to employers facing complex labor relations issues.

Joseph has repeatedly represented companies facing corporate campaigns by labor unions and their allies, including global campaigns. He also assists clients with the difficult labor relations issues that arise when companies undergo rapid change or technological challenges.

Joseph leads the Strategic Campaigns team at DLA Piper, which assists companies responding effectively to global and national union campaigns. The team coordinates DLA Piper’s global resources to execute a coordinated response on a national or global basis and has been effective not only with innovative litigation, but also by developing more comprehensive plans for engaging with shareholders and government policy makers, developing effective media strategies and advising companies on the application of various international conventions, (including the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ILO Conventions 87 and 98, the UN Global Compact and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises).

Joseph has practiced labor law for 24 years and has represented employers in matters arising under the National Labor Relations Act; the Railway Labor Act; Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; the Occupational Safety and Health Act; and state laws governing retaliatory and wrongful discharge claims. His clients have included the leading global companies in a range of industries, among them security, construction, transportation, retail, entertainment, hotel and healthcare.

In addition to handling complex litigation, such as the largest case the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ever brought against a construction industry employer, Joseph has a corporate background and has held senior executive positions in industry. For example, at RailTex, he was vice president of human resources during a significant company reorganization and was involved in the sale of RailTex to RailAmerica as well as the post-acquisition consolidation of the two companies. In addition, Joseph also was senior vice president of administration and human resources at Production Resource Group (PRG), the world’s leading entertainment technology company, where he served on the management team brought in to consolidate and rationalize operations after a four-year period of explosive growth through acquisition.
