5 Essex Court is ‘a highly regarded specialist set, making it a go-to for all areas of police law’. Its members frequently act for police forces. Jason Beer QC represented South Yorkshire Police in the Court of Appeal defending a claim brought by Sir Cliff Richard. Sir Cliff’s home was raided by the force in 2014 as part of ‘Operation Yewtree’ after media organisations had been tipped off that the search was going to happen; Richard was never charged with any offence. Among the junior ranks, Charlotte Ventham is instructed by Greater Manchester Police in a judicial review claim concerning the retention of a crime report relating to a ‘sext’ sent via Snapchat by a fourteen year old child.
